Recent Trip to East Texas

Okay, this should get the discussion started. On a recent trip to East Texas I rolled up and down the dial and noticed a few things...

KNUE sounded better than I remembered

KYKX sounded "hollow" what's the deal, it almost sounded like there was no "bottom" to their music

KOOI was pretty smooth, I think the transitions were good and really better than I remember them as well

KGAS in Carthage was still the same

KTBB was making for interesting talk and sounded like they are superiorly (sp?) engineered

And for KFRO to be a C3 at 500 feet, I was having problems keeping a stereo synch as I went south

Finally, East Texas Radio seems like the more it changes, the more it stays the same!

KYKX hollow sound only follows the lead of its morning host Dru

Your observations are the same as those from anyone who listens to any stations in this area for even a short while. It's as if each station is book marking its place/frequency in the market, with the result each outlet sounds as if it doesn't even acknowledge that there's an audience to be reached. KDOK-FM and a couple of other stations are the only ones making any effort at all to involve listeners in the stations' existence. All the others are just there--nothing happening and no one seeming to care about that obvious lack of connection. Quite a contrast to the "days of old" (when AM was THE mode), Longview and Tyler were hotbeds of radio activity, commercial inventories were sold out, and every day was a race for listeners. Now it's a case of mind over matter--station owners and managers don't mind about the lack of listeners and the listeners themselves just don't matter.
