Reception for KAHL 103.7 in San Antonio

I love the new radio station, 103.7, & have it in both of my cars, but cannot get it in my house on my 2 small radios. I'd be happy if I could just get it on my upstairs set as I usually keep on NPR in my kitchen dnstairs. No one seems to know what I need to do to receive it upstairs. Is there a special antenna I can get or is there a certain thing I should look for in another radio. Does Bose do radios? Also I'd like to be able to get their wonderful music when I'm in Alpine vacationing ea. summer. Of course, I usually just take my IPOD & listen to that, but have trouble getting the NPR out of Marfa when I'm in my R.V. but my car picks it up. I have a ham radio license but haven't bought any equipment, as I have other priorities right now (getting a Mac Bk, IPAD & new phone). Any suggestions for my upstairs radio right now?

Your post probably had more than a few people here excited from stating that KAHL was "new." ;)

IIRC, KAHL has been on its current format for 2 or 3 years. It's also simulcast on AM 1310.

If you're listening to a station in Marfa, I'm guessing you're some distance west of San Antonio.

I am able to receive 103.7 just fine on a Sony portable here on the north side of SA. If your radio has an antenna jack, you should be able to improve reception by connecting a VHF TV rabbit ears antenna and experimenting with how the antenna is oriented. If the rabbit ears don't improve the reception enough, you might need to look into using an outdoor antenna.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to an expensive radio to solve this reception problem. You'll improve reception on FM much more with a better antenna.

I've been able to pick it up fine when I'm down there around town. When I travel outside 1604, not so much. But I have been able to pick it up on clock radios, cheap boomboxes and walkmans. I do enjoy the station, I wish it streamed online though. I made a few tapes to take home with me.

I'm just wondering: What's the point with this station anyway? I thought it would've switched formats by now.

The other day I heard an advertisement for a nursing home on it. LOL!

And who's the owner? BMP?

Mr. Barger, the owner, said at the time of the flip that he was programming the AM with this music because he likes this music. His station, his kahl... er, call. ;D

I kind of like it too. Processing isn't bad. It's his baby. Wish I had a frequency and the money to play with it :)

Yeah, after listening for a bit I have to agree. The music is actually not bad, and the audio quality sounds almost perfect.

I was in SA the other day and was very impressed by the audio quality on 103.7. Seems the tunes sound better now than they did when new, although digital re-releases can clean up flaws in the original. Very definitely an underserved (actually unserved) target demographic. Not sure if it can keep going, unless the owner has piles of money to burn.

If you think KAHL is losing money, you don't know John Barger. He put himself through UT Law school while doing a dee-jay shift at KLBJ, managed KRLD in their first news-talk incarnation, then took over a money-losing WOAI-AM and turned it into the top billing station in the market (making it the cash-cow that positioned Clear Channel to become the dominant radio chain in the country). He flipped KONO and KRIO, and made a nice chunk of change in the process. KMFR and KAHL might not have been the top moneymakers in S.A., but I betcha they've turned a consistent profit.
I chuckle every time I see the S.A. ratings, and notice how KLUP has less than half the audience they had when they did the "Music of your life" format, and how KAHL has about double KLUP's audience size.

Do you mean Mr. Barger flipped KONO AM from Country and Western to Top 40 or Top 40 to Oldies or KFAN FM to KONO?

Do you mean KMFR 105.9 and 103.7? KMFR 105.9 had an ok signal over parts of SA until a couple years ago. I guess the tower fell down cause I haven't been able to get 105.9 very well at all in the past couple years. Or did they just decrease power for some reason?

Reception for KAHL 105.9 is better IMO, I can now receive it in San Antonio when it used to not come in at all. Perhaps they slightly increased power, but I think this is more due to the fact that K290BO went off-air.
