Reception for Upgraded 91.1 WSAJ Grove City

(Also posted in Pittsburgh board)...

My alma mater's radio station 91.1 WSAJ Grove City recently completed a signal upgrade, going from 1.6kW @ 246' HAAT in the heart of Grove City to 2.7kW @ 502' HAAT in the southwest corner of Venango County. I am curious what kind of new reception some of you in maybe Butler, Armstrong, Clarion, Mercer, Lawrence, Venango, and Crawford counties are getting. The station also is now broadcasting in HD.

From my home stereo in the west side of Greenville, I used to get it now I don't. :(

Greenville was always a tough reach for us, mostly thanks to first-adjacent 90.9 WCVJ Jefferson, OH. That is especially true with in-building reception. However, I'm curious if cars might be able to get it a bit easier thanks to the added height. Western parts of Mercer County also used to be difficult reach for the station because of the way the old antenna had to be mounted on the tower. Now, I believe it is top-mounted, not side mounted.

Tried for it in the car outside my house and in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Hempfield Township (Mercer County) and had the same result. It came it fair unless you were moving, then it went out. Also, tried from the Sparkle parking lot in Transfer and it was just pure static.

I pulled in WSAJ-FM a couple of times last week south of Apollo, in Washington Township, Westmoreland County. It seemed clean and clear, both when I tuned in to Saturday Light Brigade there, and then some time later when I caught a BBC newscast followed by classical music.

Saith the sheep ... BAAAAAD!

My DX post is probably still in the range of Keymarket's WYJK-1340 in Connellsville ... and a bit too far west for Cary Simpson's WTRN-1340 in Tyrone ... but I doubt even in the day I could catch WSAJ-AM that far south ... or the old WOYL-AM in Oil City.

Lol, I'm glad it comes in all the way down there, cause I can't pick it up at all in Greenville. In the house or in the car. In the car its very poor and in the house it's non existent.

Ah, good old GCC, best 6 years of my life!

We could barely pick that station up 1/2 mile off campus. Are they playing all Christian Rock these days?

From http://wsaj.com/

We broadcast the best in independent and alternative rock music. The music you'll hear on 91.1 The One is different from anything on the radio in the Grove City area, so check it out!

91.1 The One offers something for everyone, every day of the week! Our show schedule has more details about student programming.

When students aren't on the air, WSAJ offers the best in cultural programming. You'll hear hourly newscasts from BBC Radio, weekly specials from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Saturday Light Brigade, jazz, bluegrass, and much more!

College chapel services can be heard every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 AM and Sunday nights at 6:30 PM when school is in session.

WSAJ is also the official home of Grove City College Wolverine football and basketball.

As for the signal ...

WSAJ Radio broadcasts in both analog FM and the new HD digital format on 91.1-mhz. Our coverage area is an approximate 35-mile radius around the Grove City area, but carries well-beyond that range to the North, East, and South. We are a class “B1” FM station, as defined by the FCC; our Total Power Output (TPO) is 3.3 kilowatts from an antenna 380’ above ground on a tower in South-Western Venango County. If you’re on-campus, the student broadcasting feed can be heard via our live stream.

I was PD in the mid 1980's when we did a little bit of everything. We did Top 40, Contemporary Christian and AOR. Station was located in the basement of Ketler then and studio had two turntables and a cassette deck.
