Reception of Oldies 98 Long Island in CT

I was surprised to be getting Oldies 98 W251BY from Patchogue, Long Island nearly crystal clear in Cheshire, Connecticut today. Location was in the Bovano Plaza on Route 10. I picked it up on the stock radio in the 2010 Honda Civic LX as I waited in the car as my Mom visited two of her favorite shops The Posh Pear and The Red Door Gift Shop. I've listened to Oldie 98 on Tune In before, so I am familiar with them. It's the first time I've picked them up on Terrestrial Radio. If I ever pick up anything on 98.1 it's usually Cat Country from New Bedford. Oldies 98 is a much better station that our local Oldies station "Kool Radio." One of the great things about Oldies 98 is they air classic Dick Clark on Sunday Mornings.

I usually can't bring in Oldies 98 until about the Universal Drive exit in North Haven of I-91 (when driving south). North of that when driving the other way, it goes away quickly and I turn back over to WLNG which you can still hear up to about Meriden. Was able to pull in 98.1 when my car was stationary in downtown Hamden and on York Hill where the Quinnipiac arena is it of course comes in very well as you'd expect at that altitude, but I'm surprised you were able to get it as far north as Cheshire.

Really the only areas with very clear reception all the time (whether your car is moving or not) are just north of 95 to right along the coast- anywhere from around Bridgeport to just east of Madison it comes in very well. As far east as East Lyme, I wasn't able to bring 98.1 in the last time I tried. WLNG of course is still crystal clear there since it is located further east on LI than Oldies 98 is.

I actually like Oldies 98's regular programming better than the specialty shows they air. I do like the classic Casey Kasem but not like a huge, huge fan. The Beatles one is nice but a lot of talk in between songs. Scott Shannon tends to play a lot of 80s which generally isn't one of my top favorite decades of music (although there are still of course plenty of 80s songs I like.) Agree that overall it is better than Kool Radio.

Of all the times I've tuned in to the station (including both regular programming and specialty shows), the one song I've heard the most is Sheena Easton's "9 to 5 (Morning Train)."

In the car, I get it at certain places in Meriden and Wallingford, but not for long enough to listen. On I-91, it's usually gone by Hamden/North Haven.

I tuned in Oldies 98 from the Madison/Guilford area a few weekends ago. They were airing a new all 60s music specialty show on Sunday afternoon which started around 1:30, right after the Beatles show ended. Sometimes during this new specialty show they would actually play 5 or 6 consecutive songs without commercial interruption which is unusual for Oldies 98. Usually they can only play 3-4 songs in between each break, which in a market as big as central LI is understandable.

Surprisingly that translator is one of the strongest than expected, even stronger than any 98.3 stationd which are ten miles closer for me and even beats 97.9 WUCS when it's actually within the contour range while 98.1 are nowhere near it but still got stereo status for the oldies station, impressive for the strength. 92.1 WLNG I also would listen to but 91.9 WGRS/WMMR interfere that station very well on most sets.
