I was wondering how well WUSB 90.1 FM comes in in Southern Connecticut from Long Island. On the North Shore of LI, a repeater of "Fine Arts Radio" on 90.1 FM (purpoprtedly broadcasting 45 watts from a location north of Bridgeport) manages to cause pretty substantial interference to WUSB's signal in its primary service contour, even within the campus of Stony Brook University from which the station originates.

Probably not too well, because WUSB has a directional antenna limiting it's north bound signal. They are not "non directional" (transmitting 100% power in all directions equally). The signal is aimed away from Connecticut in fact.

Was this done years ago to prevent a clash with former 90.1 WFCS New Britain? (and possibly WECS also 90.1)

WFCS-FM of New Britain used to be at 97.9 FM until 1990 or so. They are at 107.7 FM today, with a massive 36-watt horizontal signal (whatever that means).

Yes, this is true, but before they were on 97.9 they were on 90.1 (I remember, I was there shortly after the change) this was the frequency they started with in the early to mid 70's.
What I'm wondering is if WUSB signal was initially designed to be aimed away from CT to protect these two stations.

If I were to guess, it would be to protect someone else.
WFCS is/was a class D station, meaning it afforded no protection at all.
In other words, WUSB did not have to protect it.
My guess is WWPT 90.3A in Westport is the guy.

I believe it's WRXC 90.1 FM, Shelton, CT. Are they really only broadcasting with 45 watts? I've heard their signal in many places across LI under WUSB (even within WUSB's primary contour).
