Reception report for 107.1

I recently drove up to Rome from Buckhead. The signals were fighting it out all the way up I75 to Wade Green Rd. Once you pass Wade Green Rd you begin your descent into the Ridge and Valley part of Georgia. The signal came in great from Wade Green all the way to Rome and was excellent all around Rome. Coming back to Atlanta I took US 27 to Cedartown then US 278 to Dallas. Once again the signal was excellent until I drove up the piedmont around Dallas. I took Ga120 into Marietta. The signals began battling it out again between Dallas and Marietta.

Does anybody know what Cox is planning to do to fix this problem?

COX needs to shut down the translator...I think it hurts more then it helps.... I don't think there is much they can do to get the signal stronger in Atlanta since there is a 107.3 in Columbus and a 107.1 outside of Macon. They did have a CP to move the signal to just west of Cartersville on the same tower as WCCV 91.7 but they cancelled it.

Re:

The other (and more likely) alternative -- pun intended -- is to make the 250 watt translator omnidirectional and downgrade WTSH to a C2 facility with directional pattern (null toward Atlanta). This would shift the zone of worst interference into less populated areas farther away from the heart of the metro.

Simulcast is a black art. We've been doing it in land mobile radio for years. It takes precise math and launch timing of transmissions to get blanket coverage. Even then, there will be some areas where one carrier is not dominant over another and the carriers will cancel each other out. In LMR, we set the distances between transmit sites to a maximum of no more than 10-15 miles for VHF high band.

I cannot imagine this technology working well for wideband analog FM over a large coverage area with terrain challenges like metro Atlanta. It's hard enough to do with digital LMR like P25 phase 2 on 700/800MHz.

I will admit I am not experienced with the technology being used in the 107.1 system, but it sucks. The received signal is poor over a fairly large area.

Sounds like an epic FAIL to me, nevermind the programming, can't tolerate enough of the interference to stay tuned in. That should tell you something right there.

I am sure Cox has a plan. They didn't pick up this station just to "take out" a signal. They could:

#1 downgrade Aragon

#2 figure out how to move Aragon's 107.1 ten or twenty miles farther south and west (for a possible additional Urban signal?)

#3 move the translator to the new 97.1 tower for some kind of a "north side format"

https://www.google.com/maps/place/3...056,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0?hl=en

#4 or do a "super" directional modification of the translator on the existing tower to reduce the interference

#5 move the translator back to the south-side.

There could be other options. Cox has a good legal staff, after all they have the only total market Daily Newspaper, only Class A AM, a former VHF TV station and multiple FM signals in Atlanta.

I doubt they would be able to downgrade the signal since they don't own the signal . The tower is located 18 miles N/NW of Aragon.

Woman's World has applied to move the 107.1 translator to stone mountain and directional away from the city. I am not sure how this would impact the inside 285 signal but the cobb county mess would clear up.

The new contour for W298BB's application:
https://maps.google.com/?q=http://t...=107.1&contour=60&city=JONESBORO&state=GA.kml

and the existing Aragon application's signal:

60 DB signals do not overlap, but will there be enough signal to cover areas like Dunwoody and Sandy Springs without the two interfering with each other.

A hypothetical legal question. Could some take one of the Rome or Cartersville AM signals and modify it to have a COL of Aragon, and satisfy the Aragon COL then move the Aragon 107.1 to the old 105.7 tower just off of I 575 with another COL?

I highly doubt it with 107.5 so close.

Well before the the translator came about, the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs got 107.1 with limited static. No, it wasn't 100% clear but it wasn't to the point of being inaudible by no means. The clarity in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs right now is not even really worth listening to so it will be an improvement if they can get the translator signal away from the area.

I also want to add that X107 is taking part in a listeners board and I know some regular listeners that have no professional radio experience taking part in it. It does appear that the station wants to be a little more inclusive to the listeners of the alternative format vs how Radio 105.7 has done it thus far. COX does tend to be more "local" and interactive than the other radio corps in town.

Not sure if this move will help X107 make end roads around Radio 105.7 though. I will say X107 is more aggressive with new music and they are including former dj's from the late great 99x.

Typically, directional FM signals are not really directional enough to make much of a difference BUT if X107 could become a little more directional than the typical directional signal (i.e. 100.5), 107.1 may not need a translator. The signal, without the translator, is not all that bad. from Buckhead north and west. That translator just does more harm than good.

I highly doubt it with 107.5 so close.

Remember, Southern Broadcasting/Woman's World couldn't do all their improvements to 107.1 until 107.5 moved east from the Perimeter Mall area to the former location of the "Gwinnett Is Great" water tanks.

This does raise the question as to how the translator can fit in. I'm sure Radio One wouldn't mind sticking it to Cox with interference complaints.
