RECORD! RECORD! RECORD! Friday Morning, October 5th, 2012

I did it again! This log made probably the entire month, no wait, year for me!

972: HLCA Dangjin, South Korea; slow instrumental mx; Korean speech by YL; different YL in KK at 0630 PDT (news?) Anyways, Korean language meant a match here!

This station is a record breaking, shocking 5237 miles away from me!  :) It's 1500kw, and new log #455, wait it's also a new RECORD for me too!! It beats JOAK-594 and JOAB-693 both from Tokyo at 4780 miles!

Before the IOC : I nominate Crain to spin dial and go for the medal at the DX Event in the next Olympics.

He will face tough opposition by the Korean DX team. Hundreds of U.S. supporters will be cheering him on, however.

Nice catch there, sir!

Wow! Congrats on that catch!

Now, might I humbly ask what sort of setup you used to pull that one in? Or will you have to kill me after you tell me..... ;D

If there were an "Olympic MWDX" competition, I think the Finns would have a permanent lock on the gold. I suspect the US and Canadian teams would be fighting hard for silver. :D

(And congratulations, crainbebo! Nice catch!)

Do you ever get a signal from Radio Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu relay on 1475? That signal was always my key to an opening to the general South Pacific region, including the possibilities of getting Australia and New Zealand as well as the few remaining AMs in the island nations and territories.

Congrats, crainbo! I bet you can push that figure even further, as there's some pretty big fish to fry out your way. I've heard that Radio Farda's been picked up on the left coast. If I can pick that up here in eastern Ontario on multiple occasions, barefoot, it's certainly not out of your realm of possibilities. If you snag that you've beaten my record, as it's further from you than me.

Here's a fleeting one to try, with a very small capture window, which I've been after for the past couple of seasons ~> AIR in Nagpur on 1566 kHz @ 1000kW. It operates between 1325-0043 UTC. That's the one and only reason I actually wait for the end of Daylight Savings Time. I believe we're booth about equal distance to it... ;)

My next challenge-buy a Tecsun PL-380. I've heard it has 1khz spacing, so listening to 972 Korea, etc. will be better than for example listening to JOIB 747 with splatter from KXTG and KERR on 750.

Many of the better stations, like the weaker Japanese, will need a long beverage antenna. I live in a large city, so I really can't do that...

Less than $40 on eBay. Are they that capable for (barefoot) TA/TP MW DX?

With a big booster, the Tecsun PL-380 can have excellent TP reception. Barefoot it probably will pick up some of the big guns without interference...

Congrats....I wouldn't know Korean from JJ/Chinese. I know---that's not P.C.

I once got a QSL card from JOKR 954 duting my Alaska tour....they played EE pop, and I merely listed the names of the songs on my report. Aside from that, I cannot really have verified anything!

It was a PL-380 (with a Select-A-Tenna) I used to bring in 594 JOAK a little east of San Diego, CA. I'm about 7.7 miles E/NE of 5kW 600 KOGO, which was running IBOC at the time (and had shut it off for a while earlier this year but has resumed it).

Also in part of this video, I think I have the 1575 VOA outlet from Thailand (about 8344.5 mi distant, would be a new personal distance record if someone can confirm it's them), but I haven't had it confirmed yet. Around 5 or 6 minutes into the video the signal can be weakly heard on the barefoot Tecsun PL-606.

I'd love to have a Select-A-Tenna, but I'm afraid it will strength KIXI and KKNW intermod here.
I heard JOAK in November 2010. It was my first trans-pacific. Korea is #5 TP, and a new country!
pianoplayer88key, do you know if the SAT gives off more intermod? I know you are not too far from the San Diego stuff. Here in Bellevue, I'm close to KIXI and KKNW, which KIXI gives off 85/25 to 86/25 in the day.

That is one great catch, crainbebo!

I've never had any luck at all here with transatlantic AM Dxing.

As for the loop antenna, my own experience has been that it can make a huge difference in daytime Dxing but doesn't seem to make any difference at all at night.

The assumed former-German on 1593 was the last TA I ever got, and that was 15-20 years ago. The only TA I ever had ID'd from anywhere in south FL was the Trans World Radio Monaco on 1466 (now 1467) kHz.

My last TA's from anywhere in North America was UK on 1053 & 1089, then called "The New Talk Radio," now TalkSport, DXed from Newfoundland in 1999. Also the former (what had to be) Norwegian on 1314 or was it 1413? Oh well.

Back when I was stationed in Massachusetts in 1980, I got almost nightly what had to be Algeria on 891, with chanting & such. Again, I have little-to-no mastery of other languages!

My TP's from Alaska were few....I believe I did hear four NHK stations with English in overnight, but whenever it came time for the closing and maybe mentions of NHK, forgeddaboudit! Also, GE Superadios were not out yet; my best radio was my Delco car unit.

cd

Fabulous catch, crainbebo. Again congratulations! And a prediction....you'll break your own impressive record before TA/TP DX season is over.

If any of you go to Hawaii or Alaska soon, at sunrise you might be able to hear the big NHK-1 and NHK-2 TPs. Watch for language lessons. I know they do English lessons throughout the morning.

I did hear hear them in Hawaii several years ago, but my best catch was Brisbane Australia on 1116.
