Record surveys

Was going thru some boxes of items last night and came across some long lost record surveys from Memphis radio. I fondly recall getting to go to Pop Tunes on Summer Ave (even back when it was next to the Peanut Shop) and picking up the surveys and sampling the albums. Thought some of you might enjoy a couple of highlights:

WHBQ from Sept 5, 1973 has a photo of Slade on the front with announcement of upcoming concert at the Auditorium on Sept 28. Tickets on sale at Budget Tapes, Pop I's, Raleigh Springs Mall, Goldsmith's Central Ticket Office, Music Location and Village Record Shop. #1 song was "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.

(Where the heck was the Village Record Shop? I must have known then but I can't remember now)

WHBQ from April 3, 1974, has Barry James, Jon Rivers and George Klein on the cover with "Q Ca$h Countdown" winners. No 1 song was "Bennie and The Jets." There is a mention of the upcoming Savoy Brown concert the Auditorium North Hall on April 12. Tickets were $5.00 in advance and $6.00 at the door. Other upcoming concerts were:
Johnny Rivers April 9-13
Foghat April 18
Mott The Hoople April 20
Todd Rundgren April 28. WOW!

WHBQ from March 14, 1978, has photo of DJ Dickie-Do. Top song is "Staying Alive."

WLVS 94 FM "Sound Chart" from Feb 12, 1979 has "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" at #1, with a cartoon on the back featuring Don Roberts.

WMPS #197 - undated, with photos of Rick Dees and Bill Murray. Top song was "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt, so this would be early 1975.

WMC-79 Constant Country from Feb 17, 1975. Top song is "Linda On My Mind" by Conway Twitty. Stop by Coleman's BBQ for your 79 window sticker.

Reminds me of "Q balls" - the orange styrofoam balls that were to be put on the tip of your car radio antenna compliments of WHBQ. Saw them all over the place.

Will radio ever return to these glory days?

OK class! Hands up for everyone who sported a 56'HBQ "Top Banana" sticker on their car, bike, locker at school?

Village Record Shop was on Knight Arnold just east of Perkins.

Not an intersection you would want to be hanging around today, but in 1973 it was the definition of suburbia.

Music Location was in the Southbrook Mall (another place you wouldn't want to be today) and they had a location on Walker near Memphis State.

Anyone remember what a big deal it was when Peaches opened up their big record store in the old Parks-Belk at Park and Getwell?

You bet! I still have my vinyl (all the records you can eat! part of the compensation package) in Peaches Crates. Heaviest objects in the world per square foot to move.

I mentioned in an earlier post on another thread that I went to that Slade concert in the Auditorium. I think they had 2 albums and were never heard from again.

There have been two great Slade CD's in the last two to three years from Shout! Factory. One was their greatest hits and the other was the soundtrack to their movie in the 70s.

Yes I do - like Rob, I still have some of the wooden crates for records, but mine are for 45's. Also have a couple of the wooden storage crates for 45's from Sound Warehouse. Both were great stores, as well as Planet Records when it was over on Winchester briefly. I also used to buy from Jerry (can't remember his last name) over at Balmoral Records, and bought a lot of stuff from my old pal Andy McAlexander at Pop Tunes various locations. I have not seen Andy in several years; don't know if he's still in the music biz or not.

Thanks for the reminder on Village Records location - I do recall it now.

Here's one more from WHBQ in 1970 (my oldest one).

From issue no 177 - Sept 2, 1970. A note on the cover to be sure to "Hear the ALL TIME GREATEST on Record on the WHBQ Hall of Fame Saturday at Noon."

# 1 song was "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross. # 30 (previous week at hitbound) was "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf.

On the back were two "Big Hitbounds" - "El Condor Pasa" and "God, Love, and Rock and Roll". Also a photo of "Q Jox" Steve Taylor, Robert W Walker and Cliff Saunders presenting a trophy to Queen Deborah Barnett, from the WHBQ Drag Racing Festival. Nice looking blonde I might add.
