Recording DX catches

Interested in knowing how DXers record their long distance stations. Though some us might have a cassette recorder or reel-to-reel, or even a computer, the rest of us might not have a way to record those once in a lifetime, elusive stations from afar. Some DXers have used their cellphone's video camera to record, which is great especially if an FM station uses RDS/RBDS so one can record the station display as well as the audio. I have used my Sandisk mp3 player/recorder for some catches, and there are free smartphone apps such as Hi-Q mp3 recorder for Android that will also work. Without a smartphone perhaps one could call your own voicemail and record. How do you record especially so while mobile? Pull over and park if needed to be on the safe side, of course!

Most of my recorded catches have been from a stationary spot, so I use either a small cassette recorder or the fancy tape deck. I know, that's sooooo 1980's.

The cellphone video camera isn't a bad idea! For RDS, I use my digital camera.

I use Total Recorder ( www.totalrecorder.com ) to transfer to mp3, in case I want someone online to hear my catches, or to ID an unID.

I use a pocket-sized digital recorder - in my case the Zoom H2. It has a line-in jack and a level meter, and can record to wave (or mp3) format among other things, so I just plug in a patch cable from the radio's headphone output to the H2's line input, and plug my headphones into the H2's headphone output and listen there. (I try to use a patch cable at least a few feet long, otherwise the H2's interference may get into the recording.)

My tape recorder broke at the end of last ES season, so Ive just bought the Sony ICD-PX820 Digital Voice Recorder. I will let you know how it performs.

Some of the features that drew me towards it were:
-Stereo recording via a 3.5mm input (many only have mono recording since the 3.5mm input is meant for microphones)
-USB (so I can quickly transfer recordings, instead of playing them back like a tape)
-MP3 Recording (Some digital recorders use WAV which is uncompressed and fills up memory quick)

Sure I could do all of this on my computer, but this should be easy and portable. I can keep it right next to my radio without warring about much interference like you would with a computer next to the radio, especially on the AM band. By having it next to me I can quickly write down the time on the screen when I logged a possible station during an ES opening, since during ES openings every second counts.

As far as visual stuff like RDS, I usually just write it down on a slip of paper. Having a picture of RDS doesn't show its authenticity anyways, since its pretty easy to spoof RDS with a capable ipod FM transmitter.

All my YouTube DXing videos are from my 5 year old digital camera that also has a video function allowing one minute of video capture.

I wish more people would post their catches here on audio or video. I've really enjoyed the ones from tfcwings and cd637299.

wellllll, we cannot post our mp3's here, so I either have them on another website to which I link, or I attach them in e-mails, but naturally, only if I have the other person's e-mail....can't do it in PM here.
