Recording gear using HDMI

I think this may be a stupid question so I apologize in advance.

I'm wondering if there is any gear (compressors, preamps, interfaces, etc) using HDMI, and if not...why not?

It seems everything in "home electronics" is going this way now and I'm wondering if it's just a matter of time before this stuff does as well and what would be the benefits/disadvantages.

I have seen a few units using spdif which I believe is equivilant to the audio portion of HDMI (I really don't know if thats the case, but it's my understanding :-\

Wouldn't it be better to begin the recording process digitally and then not have to worry about a/d conversion.

Most pro audio gear uses AES/EBU or S/PDIF for its digital interfaces. Those existing interfaces already DO allow the recording process to begin digitally and now have to worry about multiple A/D & D/A conversions.

As of today HDMI sees use more in combo video/audio applications and I don't expect the pro audio equipment manufacturers will adopt the interface unless there's a high enough demand for it.

As far as weird uses for HDMI I saw some Ethernet Gig switches that used HDMI to link them together (max of 6 stacked), not sure what the throughput was.
