recording/on air light

Got a friend who's hooking up a studio for the company she works for. Her boss is an old radio guy and wants their production studio to mimic that of a radio station studio... specifically the recording/on air light that turns on when the mic pot is turned on.

Now i don't know of any production boards that have circuits that do this (she's got a production board, not an on air board)... question is do any of you? I suggested connecting it to a light switch that's mounted on or near the board, but i'm not an engineer.

Any ideas i can tell her to get her boss off her back?

thanks!

Jim,

Your idea of a light switch is certainly workable but it reminds me of a design I had for a simple alarm clock. It was a bell mounted on the headboard and had a string attached. All you had to do was pull the string when you wanted to wake up. Worked great as long as you remembered to do so.

Seriously, management folks need to realize that when they cut their engineering/technical staff that some things just won't get done anymore. I have no other advice for you or your colleague.

I have a light switch at a studio with a Mackie console. Works great.

A year or so ago I installed a Soundcraft console in a production room...I put one of these in...http://www.broadcasttools.com/view_product.php?pid=26 It performs a number of functions. If you plug it into the inserts where the mics are plugged in it can turn the mics on and off. If you run your monitor speaker feed through it they will mute when the mics are on and it will give you a contact closure to turn on your light.

I came across some a few used Henry Superelays a while back. Using the closure from the CCII the Superelay will send AC to your light and make it flash if you like. I used a normally closed relay on it to mute the ringer in the phone. Cool stuff.
