recording phone calls to put on the air

I got a good one for you guys,
dunring my show I want to be ableto put phone call over the air but in order to I have to record them Etc...
I was curious if you guys knew of a good phone recorder that would go to a regular 1/8th input. I have the software to do it but in trying it with radioshacks telephone recording control makes it sound like crap. my drawback with the radio shacks model is it records in mono, not loud enough, when amped too much buzzing in the backround and my voice over the phone and lastly it is way too loud compared to the people calling in

I dub my callers into Cool Edit with the aux function of the board. I cue the phone hybrid and the mic, and the mic is wired back into the hybrid.

first they all will be mono, a phone line (and your voice all the time for that matter) are mono to begin with- hence why mic inputs are mono.

what you need is two things:

first setup a mix-minus on your console, you need to send your mic (or any other sources) to the input of the hybrid but WITHOUT the hybrid output in the mix (i.e. all the sources you want the caller to hear minus themselves).

second a decent hybrid or phone coupler that will provide some isolation from your audio and the caller (so your voice dosent sound 'weird' as you say). There are a bunch of now 'outdated' units out there out there by Telos and Gentner, you might try an ebay search for 'telephone hybrid' and see what you find.

Phone lines will always have some noise, but the buzzing could be from bad isolation of the line from the audio outputs, as is common in many cheap phone couplers (notice there is a big difference between a phone coupler and a hybrid now?).

good luck.

Your best bet would be to speak to the Engineer at WWLR and tell him what you wanna do. If he's any good, he'll know exactly what you wanna do and how to get it done.
