Recording streams and free audio software

I've been thinking about a post like this for a while and since Adam asked, here goes... Feel free to correct and add your favorites and recording techniques as well.

This is how I record to my computer. All of the software is free.

First the encoder. I use the RazorLame for encoding .wav to .mp3
Available free here:

http://www.cowonamerica.com/download/

Then to edit. This free program only edits mp3's but very easy to use, I use it mostly for breaking down long airchecks into normal times such as 79min. for CD and 90 min. for cassette length. Available free here:

As far as recording to your computer using jetAudio, that took a little experimenting with volume control. Generally it records on the loud side, so not only do you have to mess with the recording volume pot in the program itself, but also keeping the volume of your computer AND whatever stream you're using's volume level low as well, for recording streams. Oh YEAH, turn OFF all sounds on your computer...and don't visit sites that have automatic audio or sounds while recording with this software, whatever you hear is what is being recorded. Hey, it's free. It does work well once you get used to it. It has a timer for recording length but not for timer recordings. I mostly record in .wav and later encode to mp3 using lame. You can also record in wma9 but don't go over 79 min. if you ever want to burn it to cd and listen on a regular cd player. WMA9 will also upload to YSI just fine but again not over 79 min. Maybe you can encode wma to mp3 but I've not tried that, preferring to record as .wav and later encoding to mp3 for longer airchecks.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I have a friend who loves Audio Record Wizzard. I never got it, because I use Replay Radio.

Here is the link for ARW.

Here's another that's free that does alot: Audacity

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you feel like spending some money though, go for Adobe Audition 1.5 which does more than any other program listed here.
