Recovering Lost Audio Files

I lost some audio on my computer, and used Ontrack Easy Recovery to recover the files. The full names, extensions, and sizes are there, but they won't open or convert for play in any of the programs I have (Pro Tools, Wavelab, Audition). Neither waves nor mp3's. The closest I get is opening them is in Audition as PCM RAW Data, but even then, all I get is white noise.

Is there another recovery software I can use, or a different way to recover these files where they will play?

Did you lose the files as a result of a computer virus or computer malware?
If so, the files have probably been corrupted beyond repair.
That's why computer backups are so very important.

If you can bring them up as PCM Raw Data--you mIGHT be able to convert them to mp3 & /or waves. Don't know of any Freeware--but I use "mp3 to wave converter"--i think it's about $30--cheap price for converting pCM Raw Data into files you can use--try downloading it--they give you 10 "sample" conversions before you have to purchase it.

The files are damaged. Adobe tries to import anything it doesn't understand as pcm. That is why it is white noise when he plays it. The files are gone.

Not necessarily Chris ... I'm not saying this isn't the case here however I run in to the "PCM" situation a lot and have found that either changing the file extension to .MP3 from .WAV or vice-versa sometimes works. Also, in Adobe try going to FILE>EXTRACT AUDIO FROM VIDEO and change the file type to ALL FILES. Then try to open one of the recovered files. That has helped me recover files that Adobe/Cool Edit didn't recognize right off.

Hope it helps.

I hope you are correct... I never like to see people lose files, but that has never been the case for me.

No viruses. I was wrong for not backing up sooner (that was the plan). I'm using Ontrack recovery software. It has about 6 different recovery solutions. The first did not work, but the second try did recover full files (only 6 files were pulled as a test due to lack of time). The next step is to recover them all and put them in their correct folders.

Thanks to everyone for their replies!
