Recreate 80' WHTZ chain

That description applies to the earlier version of the Vigilante, before it did its own final clipping. After the Vigilante was updated with distortion masked clipping of its own, the 8100 was only used for pure stereo generation.

Glad to hear you got through to Frank. Have you ever heard about https://www.261.gr/proradio.html? It is an online museum of broadcast audio processors past and present run by a gentleman in Greece. And there is some nice information on how the Dominator 700 was modified to create the Vigilante at https://www.261.gr/Jim Somich Processing 3.html. (Edit: the source appears to be https://www.thebdr.net/a-history-of...n-their-own-words-learning-from-the-pioneers/)

And there is additional information about how the Vigilante worked in this old thread as well as this old thread.

That's so interesting thank you so much for that, I wish I can get my hands on a Vigilante processor but I think that will almost impossible

Are you going to rack mount them?

Yes of course! I think this tribute to the five fist years sound of Z100 deserve a nice one!

I found a company called Gould Case Works in Netherlands that made beautiful work! Rob the guy who made them is also really passionate and super kind
In our industrialised world, it is way to seldom to have direct contact with the people producing the goods that we buy, it makes the products all the more precious
So I asked him similar racks that those 2 with a total of 16U, I’m waiting for them by the end of October

This sounds like a fantastic project. You're fortunate to be able to do it.

I hope when you finally have everything completed and working, you will come back to this thread and let us make song requests that we can hear WAV captures of from this air chain! :)

Honestly I’m not and it is only about passion, it been years I wanted to do it so it’s now finally the time!
I will definitely send you some! It is also about sharing with the others, especially when they help you to do it!

Awesome!

I, personally, would love hearing the action of the 222A by itself at various settings.

Assuming you have trouble finding a 222A, incidentally, I believe that the Modulation Sciences MYB-2 ("Stereo Maxx") may have been even more widely used than the 222A itself during that era. It was said to be capable of a much stronger effect than the 222A.

So, absent any available 222As, you might look into that one as an alternative.

If I wanted do it right I will wait for the 222A... And also because in the chain there is another gear that can affect the stereo image
The Stereomaxx along with the Orban 111b Spring Reverb will be probably too much I think

I am honestly more worried to find or build the Vigilante!

Dylan Petit, I have an Orban 222A but, I'm not so sure I want to get rid of it. On the other hand, the holidays are coming and we can talk, if you're interested.

Thanks for answer, I just can say that if you sell it to me it is for a great project and I will take super care of it
In the mean time I can understand if you want to keep it, I’ve had many of these a decade ago but I was forced to sell all of them…

One more thing I can say, it’s not so hard to find those machines with just a little good will
To be honest I’m more worried with the customization of the Dominator (Vigilante)

If someone of you can connect me to a guy that have the capacity and knowledges to do it, I will be really greatful

And for those who wants to know how this previous chain sounded, here is a recording of Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
- (the 8100 was used a de-emphasis before the audio test jacks)
- (the 1U grey rack below the XT2 was a home made 6 band attack, release and gain remote of the XT2, yes I decided to let the band 5 and 6 worked independently)

I always liked the sound of the XT with bands 5 and 6 operating independently too. Your previous chain has (well, had) a charming retro sound. Do you still own the Stereomaxx or was it sold with everything else? Also, the grey rack unit is very interesting. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone breaking out those controls like that. Was it your original idea, or something you built based on other boxes built by other engineers?

That was not my idea, it was inspired by a famous French radio station that was born in 1989
We find 2 pictures that we used to create our version:

This one just came in, it's now in 110v power word and I have to adapt to fit with our 220v
If anyone know how, I will be appreciate it, thanks!

Hi Dylan:

Looking at the online manual here:

One can re-wire the power transformer primaries from 110 (windings in parallel) to 220VAC (windings in series). Feed your power input to transformer T501 pins 1 and 4 and connect pins 2 and 3 together to put the two primary windings in series.

To safely test, if you have a Variac (variable AC transformer), you can turn the Variac to output 110VAC, then measure the rectified DC at filter cap C501 and see if it reads about 11V. If this is true, bring the Variac up to 220VAC and confirm about 22VDC at the filter cap. If this is also correct, you are good to make reeeeeevvvveerrrrbbb.....!

I am enjoying your journey. Maybe Frank Foti will visit with tips.

Thanks a lot for your help!
The Orban is now correctly powered but I need you on other things I didn't understand well

Could you please tell me how can I connect it in my chain? I'm thinking to put it between BBE 802 and Audio Prism but I'm not sure how and if I have to taking care of something special...
I've just read the manual and if I get it, I will only get the reverb sound on those outputs on rear panel and I have to mix the original signal with the reverb to get the music + effect
If I'm correct, how can they deal with that on Z100 (or other radio stations using the Orban 111 in the processing chain)?
I'm lost!
Thanks again for your help

Hi Dylan:

For the input to the reverb, as it is unbalanced you should use the positive output of the previous piece of gear feeding it and ground, or insert an audio transformer between the units. Use the unbalanced Mixed Aux output of the reverb to feed the next unit and if it is balanced you will need to connect the grounds together, the positive output of the reverb to the unit, and tie the negative input to ground.

Unit order is your choice and it is worth trying the reverb after any AGC (your CRL gain controller?) and the next unit, or farther down the line. I would try it after the Prisms and before the Optimod as it would give you more controlled reverb with less pump up. It is your preference, and I do not know how Z100 did it.
