Recreate 80' WHTZ chain

Thank you so much guys for those messages
I've made a mistake, Frank told me that the reverb was used on the air was a Yamaha REV5
I have now to return the Orban one and trying to find the REV5, I think it will be easier hopefully

172621ae-1b38-417c-9eeb-3853f65cfaf4_yamaharev5 copie.jpg

And it will be probably easiest to put in the chain because I've seen this "mixing" direct/rev button on the device
Fingers crossed!

Yeah I’m happy that he gave me some advises but even if I can get all those processors it will be another challenge to setup them correctly!
I’ve just found the reverb and maybe the stereo enhancer!
Next challenge will be customise the Aphex Dominator 700 into the Vigilante version
Please let me know if you know someone who can help on this thing! Thanks

Hi,
I’m still waiting the Yamaha reverb, the stereo enhancer, the Dominator 700 and racks but I’ve decided today to begin the first settings on BBE and Audio Prism, it is so cool to see those lights alive on music that I want to share this short video with you

By the way, your Youtube account has 4 videos featuring hour-long airchecks from your previous airchain. In each one's description is a link to an iCloud download for the WAV version of its audio track. However, each of those links appears broken to me:

https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/08d37CC...
https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/04eDF4A...
https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/055OLS4...
https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0e3Jm84...

Note the three dots at the end of each. Is this the same way they appear to you? I can't download from them.

Here are those links, the previous setup was big but honestly I could have done a best sound If I understood in a better way each processor:

CRL SGC-800, BBE 822, Modulation Sciences Stereomaxx, Audio Prism Texar, Optimod 8100A with XT2
Part 1

CRL SGC-800, BBE 822, Modulation Sciences Stereomaxx, Audio Prism Texar, Optimod 8100A with XT2
Part 2

CRL SGC-800, BBE 822, Modulation Sciences Stereomaxx, Audio Prism Texar, Optimod 8100A with XT2
Part 3

CRL SGC-800, BBE 822, Modulation Sciences Stereomaxx, Audio Prism Texar, Optimod 8100A with XT2
Part 4

When I listen them right now, I found that we miss some air and it's too heavy and bassy, I like when the snare drum slap and when the vocals are more open and feels like they fly off

I need your help on something
For those engineers who used Audio PRISM combined with and exciter EHR, Aphex or BBE etc I would love to know if you out the exciter before or after Audio Prism.
At first I try to putt the BBE before the Audio Prism but they add so much energy on bass and high frequency that I’m asking now if it will be not a better thing to put the exciter after and let the Audio Prism in their role of leveler before anything else?
Thanks for your thoughts!

The 700 is here, I need now to find how we can evolve it into The Vigilante version
Please any help will be super appreciated, photos, schematics etc…
Thanks

Hi all,
I received few days ago the wood rack from CNC and began to add the gears that I already have into it
For now I’ve just using Audio Prism and BBE Sonic Maximizer and trying to learn how they work listening songs that I know perfectly, I’ve tried the BBE before and after the Prism and I feel that the Prism works better without the BBE before them
On a CHR format with various music genres, the BBE can add some bass on rap songs and the Prism can get quickly into buffer active and I had to reduce too much the input level
Things seems much better when I put them after the Prism, I’ve just reduce a little bit the high frequency and I feel pretty confident to continue with the next steps
I’m waiting next week the REV5 by Yamaha and I’m about to get the Orban stereo enhancer soon, fingers crossed
I will take my time to listen all these before considering to add the 8100 with Dominator 700
Here is a short video of what it looks like right now

Looks like you're making great progress assembling the rack. I would love to be able to offer some of the advice you're seeking on the 700's conversion into a proper Vigilante. But that unfortunately predates anything I was ever involved with, processing-wise.

I'm actually a bit curious why there aren't more engineers chiming into this thread who were around during this vintage equipment's heyday. It makes me wonder if the majority of those guys are all retired now and no longer keeping up with forums like this. Back when I signed up to this forum in the 00s, the place was jumping with them! Hopefully there are still some true old schoolers lurking out there who'll finally notice your project and offer up the wisdom you're looking for. This could be such an awesome project with the right community input. :)

Incidentally, I'm listening to your 40 minute except as I write this, and it sounds quite pleasant, even with only the Prisms and BBE at work. It's no surprise so many stations loved those Prisms. I wouldn't have minded having them as my only processors for a small town station. Kudos on your playlist, too. Your selections are perfect for this equipment's era, remix selections and all.

Oh, and the cabinet looks swell. I especially love the top half. Everything visually matches perfectly, almost like those pieces of gear were born to be situated together in that section.

Good luck with your continuing build. I'll be monitoring and looking forward to more "airchecks." I can't wait to hear some A/B comparisons once you have your 222A in place.

Thank you so so much for your message, it means a lot to me
Of course I would love help from the masters of processing to make things in the rules of art
Orban stereo enhancer probably coming next week, I find one in Europe
I also find the manual of the Vigilante somewhere on the net, it gives a good starting point to know how we can modify the 700
I need now to drilled the Aphex face plate, not an easy story! If only I can get some pictures it will help a lot, so please if someone can read this and help it would be so so nice

Probably the hardest part
I have now to modify the Aphex 700 into a perfect Vigilant reproduction
I have to drill 6 little holes on the top for the attack/release of the 3 bands (with fast, slow and medium positions each)
I have to drill 4 holes on the right for the four 10-turn pots with dials for the clipper drive and low, mid and high thresholds
also we need to change the second and third band to switch between 100hz to 160hz and the other from 4500hz to 6000 if I'm correct

Any help, advise, photos from the original Vigilante will be much appreciated

Here is the only photo I found on the net of the Vigilante:

Regarding the Bourns pot, there's apparently one remaining in stock at Master Electronics...I've used this distributor before...not sure if you still need it or if you had been able to obtain it in the days since you've made your post: Master Electronics - Bourns 3600S-1-103

I've been lurking a while and have been really excited about your project...I can't wait to see how it all comes together, and it seems that it certainly has been going along well!

Quick question around the Yamaha Rev 5 - curious as I've got one myself - have you determined a finalized reverb setting? If so...would you mind sharing...? :)

Hi and thanks @djskilljt! I found some on a mexican website
It is super expensive (around 500$) but I will probably order these ones soon

Concerning the REV5 settings, I'm trying to find the best compromise to feel the reverb on vocal program but not not on music or on the discrete way as possible
I use classic vocal reverb setting to start with than I reduce to 1,1 second, I have also tried to cut the verb on bass and mid bass as possible, I think that it's better to hear it on high medium frequencies
I put the mix on position 1 from direct to reverb only
I think it depend also with the final compression level because more compression and density can increase the level of the reverb
Hope that help
