Red Alert's Sign off at Kiss

I did hear it.

Red Alert was VERY emotional at his sign off. At times he choked up. Let's face it, the guy has been a legend on that station for 30 years give or take. For him to react the way he did was totally understandable.

For me, during my college days at Marist in Poughkeepsie, while kids were going out to drink and party I would take my boombox out to an area of my dorm to pull in Kiss-FM just to record DJ Red Alert and Chuck Chillout.

If indeed he is "done" it's just because the state of the radio industry is shot. It's only a matter of time before WFAN goes to the FM and another music station will bite the dust. Radio is killing itself further and the fans of music and guys such as Red Alert are the "victims"

I can see a Kiss branded Urban AC with some of their personalities doing well on Sirius/XM. Look how successful the Studio 54 channel has been with Jellybean Benitez.

Did anyone hear Red Alert's Sign off tonight at Kiss? It sounds like he is Done! I think he just retired.

I just don't see Red retiring. He'll either show up on BLS or some other outlet. Maybe it's just wishful thinking from a long time fan. But the dude I listened to last night didn't sound like someone ready to hang it up.

I listened to the show late last night and it was his final hurrah to the station playing some classic stuff just like the good old days. I have the full 2 hours of "Red Alert's" final show on reel-to-reel recorded at 1 7/8 IPS in not so good quality, but it sounded a lot like AM radio. I'll post it as soon as I'm finished recording the final day of the station.

Can't wait to hear it.

I'm listening to an aircheck of it right now. He was in rare form. Brother showed out!!!

It was fascinating being in NYC this past weekend and hearing quite a bit of the programming on 98.7 Kiss FM, particularly on Sunday. The conversation covered topics that are almost never broached on terrestrial radio: Arbitron, diaries, PPM, station ad revenue, etc. All very taboo and some of it "insider" type talk but applicable in this situation. My favorite part was when they had New York City Councilman Larry Seabrook call in and he discussed diary vs. PPM changes and said that they (presumably Arbitron) had "jived the ratings". That's one way to put it.

I hate it for Kiss FM fans that they lost their station, but at least the talent got to say goodbye on-air and didn't get the usual radio mafia-style hit treatment. One day you're there, the next day the station has flipped and, poof, you're gone. All too often you never know when you last show will be at a given radio station.

Also, unlike some similar situations where a flipped format is bumped down to an HD2 signal, Disney went full-tilt on 98.7 with ESPN Radio on FM/HD1, ESPN Deportes on HD2, and ESPNews on HD3. Not only did the Kiss FM intellectual property get sold to WBLS, the HumDesi format that was on 98.7's HD2 was bumped down to 97.1's HD2 feed to make room for the additional ESPN feeds.
