Happened to hear an ad on WEEI over the weekend featuring Dave O'Brien and stating that he could be heard on WEEI's Red Sox broadcasts.

I know that last season he did a few (very few) games as part of their rotation, but this ad implied he would have a much larger role.

Did I miss an announcement of some kind?

It does seem you did and he is listed on thier page for broadcasts, so maybe they are looking to have somebody to do play-by-play on a more regular basis .
