Red Sox radio

The problem is the game moves too slow. That's just how it is. Short bursts of action surrounded by long periods of inactivity. Broadcasters complained to MLB about that, so they put a clock on the pitchers to try and speed things up. But what has slowed the game down again are the challenges. That eats up time, and you don't want to leave the field because you might miss the call. So they need to come up with stuff to fill while waiting for the call. Phil could get away with talking about all that stuff because he was Phil. He also left the game early a lot of nights. They can't do that now.

There are a lot of recent retired Red Sox stars who are looking for ways to keep involved with the team, and I expect you'll hear a lot of them on WEEI next season.
No pitch clock yet, or if it is they don't enforce it. The problem is pitching changes and batters and pitchers stepping out every pitch.

You can see the pitch clock on the scoreboard. It may not be enforced, but it's there.

Are you sure about that? I know the pitch COUNT is displayed, but is there really a clock counting down to zero from 25 or 30 or whatever the non-existent rule says the maximum time should be? Minor league games do have a pitch clock, off to one side of home plate on the backstop. It counts down from 15 seconds with nobody on base and 20 seconds with runners on base, It is enforced, as it is in Minor League Baseball's rule book. Why in the world would Major League Baseball show a clock when it has no rule yet (and may never if the union decides it's an issue worth striking over) to enforce?

Spring training about to start and I don't think they've named a sidekick for Joe Castiglione yet. He gonna talk to himself? Well Joe it is gorgeous down here in Ft. Myers. Can YOU believe it.

Have they announced a spring training radio schedule yet? If they're not going to start airing games until the latter stages of the Grapefruit League season, they don't have to decide for almost a month. Then again, they could just rotate various people in the role on a temporary basis. My guess is they have someone in mind, if not already hired, but don't see any point in announcing it just to please the radio geeks. If the rumored changes in the approach to broadcasting baseball are accurate -- more small talk and "entertainment," less technical baseball stuff -- the choice of color man could be an ex-player, but one with a light, irreverent touch, like, say, Kevin Millar, although I'm sure the man who gave us "Cowboy up" is doing just fine with the MLB network and wouldn't be tempted by a 162+ game grind as No. 2 announcer for the Sox. I'm still skeptical of just how Castiglione will work in any approach that values spontaneity and humor.

Hands down, my first choice would be Dennis Eckersley...but he's already made it clear in the past that he has no interest in doing a full season of games. With that in mind, my vote would go to Lou Merloni. Not only is he an ex-player, but he actually has some broadcasting "chops". I hope the RS go ahead with the idea of having a third person in the booth...perhaps it could be on a rotating basis.

OH!...By the way...Joe Castiglione is resting comfortably and is recovering nicely from his Spontaneity/Humor bypass operation.:D

Didn't he have that before he took the job?

Thinking outside the box, could the Sox be thinking of a female No. 2 announcer, like Suzyn Waldman with the Yankees, or some other diversity-driven choice?

How about a robot? Alexa what is the score and who is on base?
In the windmills of my mind, I can already see the potential for a budding romance between Alexa and Carmine the Computer.

This thing could even turn into a Menage a Trois if Siri becomes involved.:D

I may well be in the minority on this one, but way "back in the day", the Red Sox should have snapped up Suzyn Waldman before the Yankees could get their paws on her.

I think it's way past due for the Red Sox to have a woman as part of the broadcast team.

Off the top of my head, one good choice would be Amy Lawrence, currently with CBS Sports Radio. Not only is she already a Red Sox fan...but she's been in broadcasting for quite a number of years now...certainly no rookie. And besides, her upbeat style could add some life to what is a sometimes dry and dull radio PBP.

Weird. Are they going to fly a bunch of them with the team on road trips or will one color man (and it looks like it's going to be only men) do each series, with a "relief announcer" joining the club at the next stop?

It also looks likely that Castiglione will be the unchallenged "lead dog" in this new setup. So how does this fit in with the supposed move toward a more conversational tone? Joe is not a small-talk guy at all, unless that talk involves statistics or Colgate football.

PS -- Castiglione/Berman sounds more awful than words can possibly describe. I can only hope I have the opposing team's broadcast available to me when that pairing is scheduled.
