Red Wolf Completes Takeover of WDRC AM&FM

Hey Marc, I wonder if Howard Stern's Mom thinks a radio station is no place for a child after she sees his 500 million $ contract from SiriusXM!

Bill,

What was the logic of moving 104.1 to Prospect? I understand the station was still licensed to Waterbury (not Waterbury-Hartford), but that was an awkward location. It was far from the highways so it was inconvenient for the sales staff, and at that time, it was far from other business activity.

WIOF had to move out of the Middlebury location after the sale of sister station WWCO AM. The Prospect location included studios, offices and transmitter site, which allowed the station to stop paying rent at the nearby Channel 20 transmitter site. Business telco lines were expensive then, and I don't know if STL was possible with the hills and valleys. The location on Rt. 69 was just over the Waterbury town line, and close to I-84. The previous location in Middlebury was not closer to the highway.

When I was really small. I don't know if it was before we bought the house in Bristol in 83 (I was 9 months old when we moved in), my folks looked at a house on Rejean Road in Southington near WNTY. They didn't buy the house because it was sinking. I believe the house was one of several on Rejean Road and Old Turnpike Road that were eventually condemned and bulldozed because of the Super Fund Site. I'm sure I wouldn't have been allowed to hang out at WNTY either.

In 1998, 16 year old Marc wrote a letter to George Stevens of WNTY telling him he was interested in learning radio. The guy never responded to his letter.

It would be in 2001 when Marc was contacted by Boz Profit (formerly known as Charlie Profit) who told me that if I was interested in learning radio to contact him. Boz had emailed Marc because he was running a fan website for WNTY then known as Blaze 990.

The sad abandoned building is still there. You can see it in this shot from Google Maps....

When I worked there, the sales offices and conference room in the rear of the bldg. were prone to flooding. Also, as Bill1820 posted, he didn't know if STL was possible with the hills and valleys. There was an issue with a large tree in front of the microwave dish, and a rumor that $ was a factor in not removing the tree! Imagine that: Merv Griffin Radio didn't have enough $ to remove the tree? Otherwise, 104 has a powerful signal - battling with 'BCN on the way to Boston. At the time, the WIOF antenna was on the same tower as WWYZ, and they were renting the space from Mr. Gilmore, who ran 'YZ, & Magic 104 with their TM and Drake Chenault format was beating "Connecticut's Natural 92" in the ratings! Suffice to say, Mr. Gilmore wasn't quite happy about that.
