It was put in a post earlier... A woman wanted the changes made and figured it would do better... I figure IMO she hated new rock (so lets go with a Jack type format that is and isn't jack... It really doesn't know what it wants to be)..Then let's flip one that is pulling in really decent numbers for a format that is half of what a tower mate is doing in BR.... I can understand about it getting into the buildings and all, but at least wait and see before trashing one doing good for a station that I personally don't see lasting more than 2 years (and it's 8 months and running right now)...

edit- even though diva92.3 did do better in BR and NOLA in the second quarter spring book.. I'm looking for either the sky to fall from burn out,or a shift in format away from the 1970s Disco also due to said burnout IMO That is why I said 2 years in current form max...

I have to say that the music on the station really appeals to me. But, I also understand that I'm in the minority there. I dont like the whole we dont talk over song intros yet we play the same stupid liners and stuff all day that are like 5 mins long. I dont think its a very good station. But, when I'm flipping through, I like to stop on it. But, I just dont like how you can go from AC/DC to Paula Cole to Paula Abdul, its odd. It beats Eagle though, I dont like the direction thats goin

Right now the red to me is a 5-10 minute station..It's fill until you switch it back to another station after the commercial break (uh you know.. the stuff we are supposed to be listening to.. hum)... People think programming a jack station is real easy and must take the Ipod on random thing to heart IMO or at least the on air product sounds like it at times..

98.1 is still pretty good for a classic hits/rock station... a lot better than some of the others trying the forumula in the state. (some need minor tweaking ,whereas others just need an overhaul)

personal opinion is can the Jack/Jill/Mike/Bill or any other name you call it for their supposed variety hits format on 93.7 and go completely classic Hits ... The first week of Red was a good fighter against 98.1 as it played the songs the Eagle played minus the Metallica/G-n-R that some find offensive and it would have rocked the ratings to better than rock 93.7s IMO (Even though personally I still miss Rock 93.7)... Cause right now Guaranty is laughing.. Laughing to the bank.. The supposed threat to the Eagle is a sham and sister station the X got some better ratings from the flip to boot....

But that's just my opinion..your milage may vary...

Eagle's real main competition is a station that is so-so in signal into the main market area (Baton Rouge Proper and I'm talking of WKBU-New Orleans) No competition really.... But how is it expanding? haven't listened lately to notice... take it more classic hits?

Also I knew the Xs numbers were gonna go up (kill the competition and see what happens) but the increase is disappointing to me. But then Guaranty is PDing it like before and turning off the older crowd who is more into active rock than some of the newer alt. rock... You are gonna gain people who like new rock, but I don't think they stay on the station like they did with 93.7 anymore...

If you can do the math, you'll see 104 had an increase before Red signed on.

Why would you think that a station in another market that does not stop on the scan in a car radio and is not marketed to Baton Rouge would be "competition" to 98.1?

This may be bold and flippant but do you even know what Active Rock is? It is not an "older" format than Modern Rock. It's not that hair band crap that Tasha Stevens played. Active Rock IS current rock.

I'm looking on iTunes at two stations, one in Chicago and one in Philadelphia (there is no active rock station in the two biggest markets in the USA) that play so-called "Active Rock" and the names are familiar: Green Day, Weezer, Chevelle, System of a Down, Audioslave, Papa Roach, The Exies, Velvet Revolver, Slipknot. That's active rock. I don't know what you think it is, but to my ears, 104 is playing every one of those bands. 104 is not playing hair crap or Led Zeppelin, which is okay by me because I don't want to hear that old stuff. Let 98.1 play that.

Rock 93.7 was poorly-programmed boilermaker mullet rock, way too heavy for a town this conservative, way too loud and dumb for a town this educated, and lacking in variety. Had they actually played those bands above they might have done better. Had they decided to be new rock instead of a hybrid, they might have built a better brand. But book after book they slid down, scaring off advertisers and pleasing not the average male listener but only the "black t-shirt" crowd.

Now if only we could have a real Triple A station like WXRT in Chicago or KGSR in Austin, then we'd have interesting radio! Instead we have a clueless station like Red and the closeted Diva nonsense!

Yeah but had more of an increase since Red came on... Actually the market sort of flip flopped between the two last couple of books, one would loose, one would gain, then back and forth....

No I was saying that Eagle has no competition with the only thing in the ratings book other than Eagle 98.1 is a rock station in New Orleans that does nothing in BR.(Hince my saying no competition really..see above) When Red came on it was hailed by those at Citadel as competition to Eagle 98.1 ... So far it hasn't shown anything to me other than it being a station that as they describe "a i-pod on random" and one that isn't good at making a flow happen... Hell I've heard 16 YOs do better...

I know what active rock is... Yes 104 is playing active rock artists... as most active rock artist play on mainstream and alternative stations as well as active rock.

What I'm talking about is stuff like Gorillaz, Beck, and some others that isn't played on active rock stations. This is the stuff that turns away people who love new rock by weezer, SOAD, Papa Roach and others you named. I know I'm in the 25-54 demo that is supposed by most that I won't like anything past 1995 but there are lots of us out here in the demo who do like the new rock if done right.

I used to like KZMZ about 2 years ago cause they mixed new and classic rock (with both sides accepting the fact and each group actually learning to enjoy some of the others music) but CC has since beleived that same old burnt songs are the answer.. (Personally I'd love to work a station up there as a alt/active hybred and show the numbers that CC gave away)

Usually a town only has either a active rocker or alternative station (usually leaning more mainstream rock)

93.7 was trying to bridge the age gap but most of the classics played was stuff that was getting burnt out... They were trying to find what worked but hard a hard time trying to figure it out. Also I won't knock Tasha cause she did a good job of playing the new rock as well as the classics but as has been said on the board..Most of the classics she played was her Cds and that is limited compared to most stations...Which was a shame for her program

104 came up as a station for new rock for a market that had to catch it from the web or Lafayette/New Orleans .. It started out pretty good, but when 93.7 came along they refocused to the alternative charting only acts and since 93.7 left has stayed with this mindset of focusing only on teens and college people.

Some of the playlist for a while could be considered a little heavy I give you that. The last 3 days before it went Rock 93.7 had a great mix with some classics that most people like and wasn't burnt out on (I find people of all ages in my experience like some of the classics as they grew up listening to that with usually a older sibling or some one who tried it and liked it) and if allowed to try this or the formula it had when the station first signed on, it would work.

Unfortuneately, Rock stations have a hard time picking their demo cause they are some of the least likely to fill out a ratings book than anyone one else. Just like 104 the x has found who listens by who requests.. For rock 93.7 it was usually the "black t-shirt" crowd... But instead of being allowed to change direction it was killed for red....

Like your thinking on red and diva.... I haven't really heard a AAA station long enough to give you a answer on it being intersting. There are two in Louisiana I know however .. KROK in Leesville and a station at SLU in Hammond that does play the AAA mainly during the day (but also webcasts)....

BTW 104 the X also plays artists listed on the AAA chart (as some cross to the alt rock charts) but some of those artists that are played on the X is what I talk about when I say there is a big enough difference for some that they won't listen to the X.....

if it wasnt for taasha rock 937 never would have had any ratings! after she left i turned it off. i hate what they were playing as an active rock station. but i also agree that red is a very poor example of a variety hits format. red just sounds like b103 did with some classic rock mixed in. zzzzzzzzzz...

hairball is still on in dallas btw..and its webstreamed!!

Too loud and dumb for Baton Rouge? A town this educated? That's why the number 1, 2, & 3 stations in the market are Urban. Followed closely by a couple of country stations. All formats known for their "educated" audiences, right? Too heavy for a town this conservative? In an area that spawned Acidbath, Crowbar, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Pantera. Right. Lacking variety. True, true. I didn't hear enough Blink 182 and Good Charlotte on 93.7. That would have made all the difference. "Had they (93.7) actually played those bands above they might have done better". I have hours of 93.7 on tape, and I can safely say that they played all of the "above named bands". And the hair bands played by Tasha Stevens were the exception, not the rule. Look a little deeper on iTunes. Radio stations like WLZR, KAZR, KISS, WAAF, KISW, WCPR. Active Rock is all of the above named bands. And Ozzy. And AC/DC. And Van Halen. And Led Zeppelin. Active Rock was created to split the difference between Classic Rock and Modern Rock. It's a measure of both. Hurry burnout! There's a spill in aisle 5 that needs mopped up!

My thoughts exactly....especially on the "town this educated and conservative". I guess that is why Walton and Johnson do so well with their sex talk..conservatives love that stuff. Seriously, new rock has never fared well in Baton Rouge because its audience is far outnumbered by the urban and country listeners. Add to that the fact that the new rock demo does not return arbitron diaries and you have a hopeless scenerio. Tasha's hairbands were an effort to get older listeners from the Eagle since they were not playing them. As far as Blink 182 and Good Charlotte were concerned...they were too pop for Rock 93.7(according to Gonzo, the PD)and I have to agree. He wanted to stay away from anything too "Top40". Yes, you could say some of the hairband stuff was pop leaning, but again, the guys into the 80's rock were older and more likely to return a diary.
