Team to sell its own advertising

The Cincinnati Reds and 700 WLW Radio have agreed to terms on a 5-year contract extension through the 2012 season. The previous contract expired after the 2007 campaign.

WLW Radio has been the club's radio rightsholder since 1969. The Reds Radio Network is one of the largest in professional sports, with 46 affiliates in 6 states, and each season broadcasts a minimum of 18 spring training games and all 162 regular season games.

So much for the recent thread about the Reds buying their own station. This apparently shows the team's interest in staying with a 50,000 watt flagship station. I do feel that in airing its games on WLW, its radio network will not reach the number of stations of seasons past.

Unless the Reds have another super season and can draw people to Cincy from far and wide. There was a time when Indianapolis, Columbus, all of Kentucky, West Virginia and most of Tennesee were Reds country and had Reds radio affiliates. This was even before satellite delivery and the network had some very interesting distribution (some had phone lines, others off air pickup from stations like WPTW-FM in Piqua). There's a reason that Indianapolis is largely Cubs country and Columbus has as many Indians fans as Reds fans and that's the team's marketing efforts (as well as on-field performance).

Let's hope the Reds put an end to the annoying commercial between every batter routine that keeps me from listening to the games. The team is bad enough, I don't need all the ads, too.

For now, anyway. But look who is controlling all the advertising.

"The terms of the new contract will allow the Reds to continue having control over the hiring of their broadcasters and will give the organization almost sole rights to selling all pregame, in-game and postgame advertising for the station."

Also, could be that they just couldn't locate and negotiate an acceptable purchase price for a station in Cincy.

Look for the Reds to take their marketing to the next level next season in an attempt to bring those fans from surrounding markets back to the ballpark....much like gr8oldies mentioned above

There's only so much the Reds can do to draw fans from out of town (which they really must do...).

The list of why people don't go to see the Reds is LONG....

It can't be easy when they have talk shows on their flagship station that portray downtown Cincinnati as a war zone!!
