References to Fox gone from KTVU website?

Speaking of KFTY. Should KFTY be in the basic tier instead of Digital 199 for comcast customers? Should it be on lets say channel 11, 24, or 30? I thought the FCC rule that cable companies are require to put ota channels in the basic tier per DMA?

Santa Rose is 55 miles north of San Francisco. Santa Rosa to Sacramento is almost as close - 67 miles east. And I bet you can get to Sacto faster...less traffic and no bridges. Is Santa Rosa in the same DMA as San Francisco?

I've never been sure how the DMA rules are applied.

In a sprawling region like the San Francisco Bay Area, even cities far away from the center of the region are close to what I would consider to be other media markets. If you live in Antioch, you're as close to Sacramento as San Francisco. Does that mean cable companies in Antioch have to carry Sacto stations? If you live in Morgan Hill, does your cable company have to carry Monterey/Salinas stations?

I'm asking because I don't know - so somebody can explain.

In Solano County Fairfield and Vacaville uses Sacramento Stations while Vallejo uses San Francisco Stations. This must be that more people in Solano commute to Sacramento and San Francisco for work.

In the 1970s, Contra Costa County (East) was once part of the what was then called the "Sacramento-Stockton ADI" (Which included Modesto). Sometime in the 80's, East Contra Costa was reassigned to the "San Francisco-Oakland ADI" (which included a much smaller San Jose). Both ADIs are now known as the "Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto DMA" and the "San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose DMA" respectively.

Many of the Sacramento area stations in addition to the San Francisco Bay Area stations, are carried on cable in Eastern Contra Costa County due to history of coverage and close proximity to Sacramento. They are not subject to blackouts either that I'm aware of.

Solano County (East) is in the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto DMA. Solano County (West) is in the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose DMA.
cable systems in Fairfield and Vacaville carry many San Francisco Bay Area stations in addition to the Sacramento Area stations due to historical carriage and proximity to San Francisco. One thing to note, since KNTV 11 (NBC) is not carried in Fairfield and Vacaville since it never was carried in the past. If KNTV were added the Fairfield and Vacaville cable line-up, KCRA 3 (Sac) COULD have it blacked out during network time there since KNTV has no history of being in the area. Also, San Jose is 70-80 miles from there.

Thanks, MRK - interesting info. I spent a couple of nights in Monterey recently, and noted that they have their own CBS and NBC affiliates, but are able to carry KGO-TV as their ABC station...I assume because there are no closer ABC affiliates, They run network programming and "ABC 7 " news, but pre-empt a few hours a day worth of KGO-TV programming, and insert locally produced programming.

I thought that was an interesting way to deal with the local issue.

Interesting thing about the Monterey Bay and ABC. When KNTV was and ABC affiliate they had themselves designated as a Salinas/Monterey ADI (later DMA) station. They also powered down to keep from infringing on KGO-TV's territory. In the 1980's, most cable systems in the Bay Area (except for Santa Clara County) dropped KNTV. The station used the home county rule to remain on the Santa Clara County cable systems. In fact, at one time KNTV was owned by Gill Cable in San Jose.

It was a rare exception to have a station licensed in one DMA, but for network rights was serving another.

Funny thing about that is on air, they were the "South Bay's News Leader" and "The San Jose News Channel" with little or no mention of the Monterey Bay area. They were in fact on cable in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties and receivable on the air.

When ABC paid KNTV to drop it's affiliation, KGO-TV made a deal with Comcast in the Monterey/Salinas market to create a "Cable Only" affliliate. All it has ever been is KGO-TV except for local ads and replacement programming whenever KGO's syndication programming conflicts with KION 46, KSBW 8 and KCBA 35.

why would KTVU want to drop FOX?

They wouldn't. I guess there's a slightly better chance that Fox might want to drop KTVU as an affiliate. But the relationship between KTVU and Fox has been mutually beneficial for over three decades now, so all this speculation is just wishful thinking - mostly by people who hope KRON can somehow return to its former glory, either by becoming the Bay Area's NBC owned and operation station; or by being bought up by News Corp to become "Fox 4." Part of that speculation is based on the opinion (with no basis in fact) that Fox really wants to have an O&O in the Bay Area.

I doubt either thing will happen.
