To paraphrase an anonymous poster in Friday’s “Taylor On Radio-Info” newsletter who explains that Lew Dickeys bonus consists of now practically worthless stock options: “This just goes to show you what a disconnect there is in our industry, and just how little the executive side really understands the how they are perceived.”
Not a day goes by when Mr. Dickey does not layoff, reduce salaries of, or just plain fire people claiming he can no longer afford to pay them. Those now on the dole do not care if Mr. Dickey’s bonus is cash, stock options, or green stamps. All they know is two words “bonus” usually given as a reward, and “$8 million”, something most of Mr Dickey’s employees would never earn if they worked for him a lifetime or two.
Add to that Mr. Dickey’s $900K annual salary, and this already wealthy man comes of somewhat less than inspiring to any remaining or future employees.
If the bonus truly is that intangible and since perception is reality, why doesn’t Mr. Dickey do at least what he expects of his employees: refuse the bonus, and halve his own salary, proving we’re all on this crippled economic ship together. Never mind. I think I know the answer to that one.
