Regent Buffalo Dominates in Arbitron Summer Ratings

"Dominant" is a bit dramatic. YRK was down from last year considerably, only beating BEN by a tenth of a point. BLK did have a great Book, but JYE lost ground in key demos, and KISS was the top cumer in the market - again.

Hardly a dominating performance...

High at Regency

Regent wasn't in control of anything long enough to have any effect on the Summer book. CBS/Infinity had a very good book. WYRK performed as expected, while WBLK had a very good book, and WJYE recovered from their worst book in years to have an average (for them) showing. Jack rebounded from a terrible Spring book to their best showing since the Stern days.

Kiss had cumes, but their shares were down again. Star remained flat, which wasn't good news. WGR showed how weak they are without the Sabres.

Citadel showed some gains with 97-Rock, but they're still down slightly from last year. WHTT is probably disappointed since they're down from last book, and from last year. WEDG is flat from the last few books, but up from last year. So much for O&A.

Over all, rock stations didn't have an exciting book. Summer books are known to be flukey because kids often control the radio while they're off from school. Diary placement also may be part of the mix.

These comments are based on the 12+ numbers, which are just the "beauty contest". WGRF and WEDG dominated Men 25-54. WBLK, WHTT, and Jack showed nice gains in Men, while WYRK slipped, and WGR stumbled.

On the distaff side, WYRK, WJYE, WBLK, and Star did well 25-54. 97-Rock gained about 1.5 shares to have a nice book. KISS and WHTT both lost about 2 shares in the demo. Jack was flat, but tied WHTT in 7th place.

BTW, notice that The Lake hasn't received any mention. They're hanging there like a chad on a Florida ballot. They're not doing well enough to create an excitement, or bad enough to pull the plug considering their signal.

If I were Entercom, I'd think about simulcasting the Sabres games on either KB or The Lake in order to make up for WGR's nightime signal problems. The coverage sucks in significant portions of the MSA because of their directional pattern. If I were them, I'd go with The Lake because of their regional coverage in the eastern portion of the Buffalo market, the Finger Lakes, and even into portions of the Rochester metro.

It might be better to put the Sabres on both ends of the dial AM, rather than putting the Sabres on FM. Why screw up the Lake (there's the lob, now waiting for the return.) With KB flaming east and covering 17 states, as well as Lancaster and East Aurora, Sabres hockey is just what the doctor might order to reduce the pain of the Leslie Marshall replay.

Nice ratings summary, Rox, especially for those of us who've only heard morsels and haven't yet seen the book or received the inside skinny from our friends in the war rooms. Also, good metaphor on the Lake as hanging chad. Any word on how Opie and Anthony did mornings on the Edge in their first book replacing Shred & Ragan? [/Mike]

Edge of Night

The summer book isn't really a fair test of O&A. They weren't on for the whole book. With that being said, WEDG showed a significant drop in AM drive, and mixed results in PM drive.
