Regent down a station in Lafayette

So, Regent loses its grandfathered status in regards to market cap and is forced to place a station in a trust to sell; they choose 105.1.

Here's my take on the situation (pure speculation)—I would imagine that while Regent could do without its most signal-challenged FM, News-Talk on FM is something that they rather wouldn't. I could see one of two situations: 1) KPEL-FM and Hot 107-9 swap formats, with rhythmic shifting down to 105.1 and news-talk moving [back?] up to 107.9, or 2) KPEL-FM moves to 97.3, with the Dawg going up to 107.9 and Hot getting a demotion to 105.1.

Either way, even though Hot clearly serves a purpose as a flanker against KSMB to protect KTDY, I don't see them being absolutely essential to the cluster as much as KPEL or the Dawg.

Any thoughts?

Also, I could see some potential of a newcomer grabbing 105.1 along with 93.7 (who Citadel has in a trust to sell) and building a nice little instant cluster.

Mr. Murder,

Those are some very astute observations on your part and I agree with you on all of them. They are all very likely. Why give up the THE ONLY news talk station in Lafayette that people actually listen to for news? It is huge money when political season comes along, and this fall will certainly be a doozy. People will follow the dial wherever Rush Limbaugh lands. KMDL is a cash cow period. KHXT formerly KRKA is dead in the water. It is a flanker station and that is all it will ever be. It brings in no money. Nationals avoid it like the plague and the only local money it gets is from clubs. It may get some juice from being the UL Lafayette flagship station but I guarantee you the listeners of UL sports change the station as soon as the game is over with. 105.1 is the weakest FM signal in the cluster. Get rid of the pea shooter. Formats are irrelevant. Keep what you need and get rid of the dead weight.

KHXT may chip away at the younger listeners for KSMB but that is all it can ever do. It in no way shape or form can compete with KRRQ. That is why KHXT had to change it's VO guy (finally) and tweak it's format (again) to better compete with KSMB and NOT KRRQ. KHXT got it's collective butt handed to them by KRRQ. KRRQ is the heritage station for Hip Hop/RnB for "South West Louisiana". KHXT makes no money. Seismic shift happen every now and then in a market. Now is that time for the Lafayette market.

I'm just saying...

P.S. Welcome to the Lafayette Broadcasters Bankruptcy Club. Everyone is doing it, it is the cool thing to do these days. Comcorp (TV KADN Fox 15), Young Broadcasters (KLFY TV 10), Regent (Radio), Citadel (Radio), and Cordillero <sp?> (KATC TV 3). And just to be nice...Gannett (Newspaper Daily Advertiser) not sure of bankruptcy but damn near close to it.

My question is who would buy 105.1. Look at how long 93.7 and before that 104.7 has been sitting in that trust. 93.7 is a great signal that could be used as either a Baton Rouge station or a Lafayette station. With regards to 105.1, perhaps Paul Marx could pony up the money and have a southern simulcast for KBON???

Unless we have inside info on how much KPEL-FM bills versus Hot 107.9, everything is pure speculation as to what Regent will do with the Newstalk format. There is no way to listen to a station and predict what they are billing unless there are very few ads. Even if you know the rate card, you have no idea what clients are actually paying or if its tradeout or part of a promo package. Perhaps somebody out there can pipe in who actually works on the inside at Regent? ;D
With apologies to Don Henley, we need some Dirty Laundry around here!

Megacycler,

You are correct and I am sorry. It is all just hersay and conjecture on my part judging what KPEL-FM bills vs. KHXT. I just assumed with all the dead air on KPEL-FM that was them trying to free up inventory.

I recently herd Paul was looking for another signal somebody call him lol
