Regent Rewards

Inside Radio said:
Buffalo revenues push Regent's Q1 revenues ahead 29%. Same-station revenues grew, too - about 1.5%. CEO Bill Stakelin says Buffalo, Evansville, Flint, Ft. Collins and Utica-Rome are among the Regent clusters that are out-performing their markets. Regent's expecting growth in the low single digits for April-May-June.

Could it be the increase is a result of Regent raising rates, especially for their #1 rated WYRK, rather than dropping their pants as they did when CBS owned the cluster? Does this indicate that Buffalo, as a market, is on the upswing? Or is it simply a cruel ruse?

"Does this indicate that Buffalo, as a market, is on the upswing? Or is it simply a cruel ruse?"

Probably neither...just a reflection of market revenue being willing to move more decisively to stations that deliver the goods 25-54, perhaps at the expense of other stations that have cheaper 12+ CPMs but don't perform as efficiently in pulling in prime demos. It probably means Regent's sales management is doing a good job of selling based on value rather than price.

Read the report: Q1 revenues are not up 29% in Buffalo, Q1 revenues are up because Regent can now officially count Buffalo revenue as their own. Buffalo/Niagara is Regent's biggest market, so that makes sense. "Same station revenue" is the key figure here: up 1.5%, which is about the same as every other decently sized chain. Nothing to write home about.

FYI, rumor has it Regent expected to sell a whole lot better in Buffalo, but is getting beaten on the street by Entercom and Citadel. With HTT stealing JYE's ratings, that won't make things any easier for them.

Hey, Regent had the opportunity to upgrade an underperforming management team, but a Silver-tongued devil managed to talk them into retaining most of the current regime. It may have been a wise move during the transition, but we'll see how Regent reacts now that they have time to assess the market and management performance.

From well-placed sources at competitors Entercom and Citadel: WJYE lost a good number of 25-54 Women to WHTT, which had a nominal Winter book, 25-54 Persons but made gains 25-54 Women. Saving grace for Regent, Jack-FM is a very strong station with numbers well placed in Men and Women, wreaking havoc for WHTT and 97 Rock. Problem is, it may also be posing problems for Regent's own WJYE. Go figure. Maybe this is only a quirk of the Winter sampling in Buffalo.

WJYE has a format, Jack doesn't. (in the "tweak" sense, respectfully)

This may mean, leave WJYE alone and fiddle with Jack more to go after Citadel's 97 Rock or something.

The fun thing about Jack is, there's room to make the competitor fail to see what direction they'll lean in tomorrow.
(wait...that was the strategy of 92.9 FM for years...never mind. ;D :D )

Jack seems to be doing a very good job gnawing away on 97 Rock's lunch as it is... it sucks that they don't have any jocks, but the station's performance can't be denied. Sure, this could all change in one book, but so far, the station is turning numbers. Remember, "volume buying, no middleman and low overhead mean they pass the savings on to you."
