Regional NFL TV coverage this weekend

Per the excellent coverage maps done by JP Kirby of GribbleNation, I've noticed a couple of interesting things about regional coverage of this weekend's NFL games:

1) Here in Toledo, the two most popular teams locally (Detroit and Cleveland)both have 4:00 games on CBS...and even though Toledo is considered a secondary market of the Lions and is subject to blackout if a home game does not sell out, WTOL is apparently choosing to carry the Browns game, which they have the option to do since the Lions are at home. If this conflict occurred with both teams playing on Fox it would be no big deal for local Lions fans since Detroit's Fox affiliate (along with several other networks, even UPN) is carried on cable in Toledo, but its CBS affiliate is not....I imagine there will be some angry Lions fans in town come Sunday afternoon, there would probably be even more if they didn't stink again this year.

2) I'm also surprised that WBBM in Chicago is choosing to carry the Colts-Chargers game rather than Steelers-Vikings, since the Bears are currently in a tight division race with the Vikings. I realize Colts-Chargers should be a very good game and a possibly historic occasion with the Colts looking to go 14-0, but I would think they would rather show a game which will impact the playoff hopes of the Bears, who are king in Chicago.

It's not being carried in Green Bay either. They're getting Cincy-Detroit. Might have something to do with CBS O&O WJMN Escanaba MI being in Lions country despite it being a satellite of WFRV Green Bay (who's Packers play Monday night).

The Colts-Chargers game is CBS's "national" game this week. The Vikings-Steelers game is only being carried in each team's dominant markets + Philly. Too bad since that's probably the best game of the day. Thank God for Sunday Ticket. :-D

I think Escanaba is actually Packer country, but they show the Lions when they can and it doesn't conflict with the Pack (in the rest of northern Michigan, the reverse seems to apply)...but GB itself certainly has no sizeable minority of Lions fans, so it's weird that WFRV would take that game. The western part of Wisconsin and even Madison are getting the Vikings game, but Wausau and Milwaukee are getting the Colts-Chargers game.

Indeed.

You can add this one too....

3). Since the Denver Broncos are on Sunday Night this week, it's kinda surprising in a way that CBS O&O KCNC 4 doesn't pick up the Cincy-Detroit game as well as the Chargers-Colts game, especially when you consider that it's a real possibility we could see Cincy in the playoffs and we've already seen the Chargers this year back in Week 2.

I say it's a surprise in a way because KCNC may not have had a say in the matter. But you never know...

Just an observation :)

Cheers for now & Happy Holidays :)<P ID="signature">______________

And to correct that other poster, the Broncos vs Bills game is on Saturday night this week, not Sunday. Here in Hartford/New Haven, we're getting the Jets vs Dolphins game, largely due to the Patriots and Giants playing their respective games on Saturday. The local FOX affiliate is sticking us with the Saints vs Panthers at 1 PM ET. :(

Denver-Buffalo is the Saturday night ESPN game. The Sunday night game is Atlanta-Chicago.

WTSP-Tampa puts their upcoming NFL schedule on their website. Here is the current link

I really like that they explain the process of how CBS selects which games the station is going to carry. They also did a good job explaining about why they are shutout of carrying some games due the the Buc's being at home and on FOX.

Any other stations do this?

Even though there is no Broncos conflict, KCNC-TV
could not air both the above (Sunday day) games
since it is a Fox doubleheader week.

In Boston, WFXT-25's early game will be San Francisco at Jacksonville. It is also being carried in Providence and Portland/Lewiston.

Why??

It appears likely that the New England Patriots will meet Jacksonville in the first round of the AFC playoffs.

Given that Fox has the Jacksonville game this week, and that the Jaguars could face New England in the first round of the playoffs, the network or WFXT figured that this game would be of interest to Patriots' fans. A chance to scout a potential playoff opponent, if you will.

Except for KTVU-2 San Francisco/Oakland (where the Raiders are at home, but blacked-out), the entire Fox network will carry the Dallas/Washington game at 4:15 P.M. EST.

I also noted that over the last couple of weeks on the Gribble Nation maps, many NFL telecasts are being restricted to the home regions of the two participating teams, with most of the country getting games that could be critical to playoff races.

Few outside (or even inside in the case of Arizona) of the Houston, Phoenix, and Tucson markets give a rat's a$$ about that Cards-Texans game? Same goes for the Jets-Dolphins game. Who outside of NYC and Florida cares?

Here in Fort Myers, we are both Dolphins and Bucs territory. Bucs (NFC) have dibs on the local FOX affiliate WFTX TV 36 "FOX 4," while the Dolphins (AFC) have CBS affiliate WINK TV 11. When both have games at the same time on the same network on Sunday afternoons, the team that corresponds to that particular network's affiliate gets its game aired. It happened some time back; both Bucs and Fins had a 1:00 pm game on FOX. The Bucs' game was aired. Vice-versa with CBS.

I do care about the Dolphins game. Our playoff chances are astronomically slim, but it's still a chance, right? :p

Maybe there's not another NFC game with playoff implications
FOX61 could show. Then again, I'm not exactly impartial,
living in Panthers country.

Note to all of you: I would expect to see a LOT of the
Colts these last three weeks of the regular season, especially
if the win streak continues; if not full games, then a lot
of updates. I'm sure you know that they are on the verge
of doing something that hasn't been done since Nixon was
president.

Does the sell-out rule still apply to NFL games? I can't imagine that the Texans game in Houston is sold out, but I could be wrong.

Radioguy 555 asks:

The NFL's blackout policy has not changed. This Sunday's (December 18th) game between Cleveland and Oakland in Oakland will not be broadcast on KPIX-5 San Francisco/Oakland because it didn't sell-out in time (72 hours before kick-off; the deadline was 1:15 P.M. PST Thursday, December 15th) for the blackout to be lifted. It's the third Oakland home game to be blacked-out this year and probably the last; they host the red-hot New York Giants in their final home game, which should sell-out.

Additionally, none of the Arizona Cardinals' home games so far this year sold-out by the blackout deadline, so they were not televised in Phoenix and Tucson. The Cardinals have one home game left, December 24th against Philadelphia (2:05 P.M. local time start).

Given that Arizona is hosting the defending NFC champs (although Philly has been eliminated from playoff contention) in what will be their final game at their current home stadium in Tempe (they are scheduled to move into a new stadium for the 2006 season), it's possible the game may sell-out before the deadline (if it hasn't already) and could become the only time Phoenix fans gets to see a Cardinals' home game on TV this year.

I think the CBS affiliate in Columbus, OH (city split among Browns and Bengals fans) also has an article on its website explaining things somewhat, but it's a bit more vague than this. Many more stations should put up something like WTSP did, I'm sure it would save them a lot of e-mails.

And, of course, the early Fox games are all pretty much el stinko. Heck, about the only ones that would've looked even remotely attractive at the beginning of the season are Saints-Panthers and Eagles-Rams.

WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford, CT is between New York City and Boston. About 2/3 of the time, we'll wind up with the Patriots, unless they're on FOX , like they are this weekend. We're one of the few markets getting the Jets vs Dolphins game.
