Regis, Don't Go Away Mad

After announcing that he was leaving "Live with Regis and K*", Regis fired his agent. Regis had been with agent Jim Griffin for some 30 years. Griffin told the LA Times when he first met Regis, Regis hadn't worked for a year and a half. The LA Times reports Regis' contract was up for renewal, and ABC/Disney wanted him to take a pay cut. Apparently Regis did not like the idea. Regis' cume is slipping but the main problem is his audience is aging out of the money demos. Regis is 79. The average of his viewers is 60. Griffin says Regis just walked away without explanation. In the current contract, reportedly Regis gets $15 million a year.

For his next gig, he can hold up a protest sign when the gold truck comes through Mayberry. ;D

"Where's Regis?" "Has anyone seen Regis?"

OK, so he's not serious about leaving. But his next show probably won't be with ABC.

So I guess his wife is happy because it's time to buy a new apartment a few blocks downtown.

He has been quick to point out that he "is leaving the show" and not "retiring". He has always been cranky, but lately he did seem to verbally trash the WABC and their "cheap" antics. The show itself has rather amateurish promotion/production/graphics/set-design, although they do bring out the big bucks on occasion for sweeps contests. Their trip to PEI last year was nearly fully funded by the local tourism bureau (which was quite controversial up north).

It's clear that he's lost a step or two, so I doubt we will see him hosting a daily show again. But I won't be surprised if he gets another big-time gig.

All this publicity is certainly going to affect the way his exit is planned.

Remember back when he was the announcer for the Joey Bishop Show on ABC and he quit on air, taking Bishop by surprise, with the claim that 'he' (Philbin) was responsible for the show's poor ratings?

I always thought this guy was somewhat strange.

Also consider this. If he spends the rest of his time on "Live with Regis and Kelly" ripping ABC, do you honestly think another network is going to hire this guy?

Let's be honest here; Regis should count his blessings because for a guy with limited talent, he's had a long successful career and should retire.

I mean look what's happened with Dick Clark. The man looks half dead and still hasn't recovered fully from the stroke he suffered years ago; yet Clark is paraded out before the public on New Year's Eve. It is a pathetic sight to behold.

(The late) James Cagney and other top actors of their day knew when it was time to call it quits. Perhaps Regis and Dick should take a cue from Cagney.

Unfortunately, Cagney near the end of his life was persuaded to come back for supporting role in Ragtime. It was not the Cagney we knew and remembered.

Dick Clark has always been a money grubber and the way he's still at it, maybe he thinks he's found a way to take it with him - or maybe he thinks he can refuse to go.

The Ego is usually the last thing to go, at least among those in the entertainment industry.

I admired Johnny Carson for the way he retired. He was done with the showbiz grind, and probably tired of being famous. Johnny was ready to live life the way he wanted, out of the glare of the public spotlight, and he did just that.
