Having never listened to WALY, I'm just wondering if this is the same Roger Quarry, or Roger Corey who has some role in the Penn State football broadcast?
Is Roger Corky his real name or is it a radio name? Did he work for Lou Marhoofer at WKMC back in the early 70's? Who will take his place on Bandstand? Why is there so much turmoil in the business. I think one is better off getting a fry wagon and being his own boss. Plus you can work in any market you can drive to!
I should say that I think very highly of everyone on air at Waly. I hope that Double D doing the afternoon show is a permanent thing. He loves that music and has a real passion for radio. It's obvious from listening that he enjoys the job and that's what people want to hear. At least I think so. KC will be a great PD and does a great morning show.
I do think it's a real shame that someone who has been part of and shaped a station for so long can be left go like that. No one is guaranteed a job tomorrow. It doesn't matter if you have been with the station forever.
If someone in the position that Rog was and for as long as Rog was can be dropped, then it could happen to anyone at anytime. That can't be good for company loyalty.
I realize that money is tight and ad revenue is going way down all across the board, but it seems that there was more here than just money.
I was very interested in reading the info promised on Monday. Was also curious as to why the topic is listed as "reinstated". Also wondered about several missing posts, (now including mine).
Very mysterious indeed.
Given Roger's position and time spent in the market, I considered this a very important topic.
I was saddened to hear that someone as talented and loyal as Rog could have been let go under any circumstances. I had the distinct pleasure of working for both Rog and Dick in the 90's and it was an experience that had a profoundly positive impact on my life. Working in the radio business brought me great joy, and left me with unspeakable memories
After Googling for the news, I was lead here, and I was able to see a few of the comments that were posted earlier, and am hoping to see some follow up on the forums. I'm certain that a few parties close to Rog have many things they would love to be able to talk about, but we all know there are contractual obligations that may prohibit full disclosure.
All I can say, is that Roger will be missed, and I hope he continues to pursue work in the field. To NOT have him on the air is unimaginable in a time of automated sat feeds, and lackluster banter. His reputation as a perfectionist and abilities as an on-air personality need no defense in my mind.
I'll miss ya Rog... Don't stay away too long... RG :'(
It is indeed a very sad day in Central PA radio when a man like Roger Corey is seemingly singled out in that cluster; whether it was a new direction for the station in the future, or to perhaps cut costs going forward. Rog's personality was WHY we listened and laughed...even had to pull over once or twice in the morning because we were laughing TOO hard.
As the person who mentored me and got me into this business, I have nothing but high praise and warm regards. Unlike many in his position, he was always willing to help younger/less experienced folks out with advice and guidance. And most of all, he cares...about you professionally and personally, another quality not that evident in this business, anymore.
He IS a consummate professional and hope that his hiatus off the air is a short one. Someone in this area would be crazy not to make him an integral part of their team!
Well, with Forever and/or Nick Galli owning most if not all of the stations in the market, there are only one or two places he could go. And those couple of stations may not need his talents or could not afford him anyway. More than likely he would have to leave the area if he wishes to continue his broadcasting career, which is most unfortunate for radio listeners in this market.
Sorry, said I'd comment Monday but had an all day commitment. Then the board disappeared. That happen often?
Here's the story on Rog. All true no conjecture.
First it (the dismissal) had nothing to do with his on air ability. A more talented man I've not worked with. He had a conflict with some higher ups who wanted a move with music that he failed to do in a timely manor according to management.
Rog, i'm told was asked to "refresh" the music some months ago and the company felt his heart wasn't in it. I'll say for Rog, when he puts his mind to do something it's done, or if he's not really on board with the move he waits. That's what he does and has for years. Bad Roger? Nah, it's just Rog.
He'll be missed. I will miss him forever in my life on the air.
I believe Rog made his decision some time ago to prepare for the possibility of getting tossed. He already has things in the fire and won't be out of work much past the end of the year, if that. He's been well compensated with severance for the years he's spent with Forever so no worries there.
Be well my friend.
Now as to the new WALY.
It's starts on December 26th.It has some music additions and subtractions but it's still gonna be one hell of a format. KC O'day is taking mornings and I look forward to working with her. She has a rep of being tough on the air but there will be a softening of her approach and GUESS WHAT? I'm gonna love women again.
Finally Forever did what they thought was best for their company. I could 2nd guess them for months but it's done. Frankly if it would have been me at the top I would have asked Rog to step down as PD and stay on the air. But not my call.
KC will be good for the morning show. She has done a fabulous job for years in the mid day slot. One of the most courageous and hard working guys in the business Bill Kurtis (BK) will continue to do his great afternoons. And I can only hope I'm still alive by December 26th. If I live till that day it WILL BE "a beautiful day in central Pennsylvania".
