Since there's no specific board for all-Christmas formats, I'm going to start this thread about Christmas radio here.
It seemed to me that radio doesn't play much in the way of religious Christmas songs any more.
Using playlists posted on Yes.com, I have surveyed the music played by three prominent (in their markets) all-Christmas stations yesterday (Saturday, December 22nd).
The stations selected were:
* WMJX-106.7, on my hometown of Boston,m owned by Greater Media (a smaller group owner, with corporate headquarters in the Boston area).
* KOST-103.5 Los Angeles, owned by Clear Channel.
* WBEB-101.1 Philadelphia, a locally-owned Soft AC station.
For the 24 hours from 12:01 A.M. to 12 Midnight (Eastern time for WMJX and WBEB; Pacific time for KOST), here's the total number of religious Christmas songs programmed by each of these three stations:
- WMJX: 20 Religious Christmas songs.
- WBEB: 38 Religious Christmas songs.
- KOST: 36 Religious Christmas songs.
I was surprised that all three, especially KOST, would play that many Religious Christmas songs. I had thought that KOST (and other Christmas Channel all-Christmas formats) might have played only a handful of Religious Christmas throughout a 24-hour day, if evce one.
On the other hand, I made this informal survey just three days before Christmas. Perhaps the three stations whose playlists were examined (and other all-Christmas stations) played far fewer Religious Christmas songs during November (in the cases of WBEB and KOST) and early December (WMJX went all-Christmas on December 5th).
