RELIGIOUS TRINITY BROADCASTING NETWORK MIRED IN "FAMILY" LAWSUITS

Article sounds as if all is not on the up and up at Trinity.......give them your money and they'll spend it as they want (on anything they want).

"Ministry watchdogs have long questioned how TBN - which declared more than $800 million in net assets in 2010 - spends that wealth."

Wikipedia: TBN operates 5 networks and owns 28 stations (more than CBS, FOX, NBC - but less than ION and Univision). According to TV News Check TBN currently is the third largest over-the-air television station group in the country.

"TBN raked in $92 million in donations in 2010 and cleared $175 million in tax-free revenue, but its net income plummeted from nearly $60 million in 2006 to a loss of $18 million in 2010, the most recent year available. Donations fell by nearly $30 million in the same period - a hit the network blames on the bad economy."

The fall of Jimmy Swaggart, Robert H. Schuller and to a lesser extent Jerry Falwell and Pat Robinson have all at one point either been been suspected or convicted of fuzzy math when it comes to their bookkeeping.

I would expect Paul Crouch and Company to be doing the same type of book cooking. That HQ property they have along the 405 near John Wayne Airport in Orange County couldn't have been cheap. Someone paid for it and unfortunately it was by the poor souls that get hoodwinked into the "Pay To Pray" model as some symbol of faith restoring or healing.

Jimmy Swaggart has his own cable channel - SBN. On Comcast in Bristol, Connecticut it's Digital Channel 90. On all 3 COX systems in Connecticut it's on Digital Channel 72. "Leased Access" on both systems. The good news? On Comcast at least the volume is so low most of the time you can't hear it. :p (Channel 90 was always Leased Access, but previously it was Jewelery TV I don't recall if they had the Volume Issue).

The old people televangelists steal cash from are dying off, and younger people aren't as rapidly anti-gay or anti-abortion

A little more direct than how I'd have put it, but I think you're right: The audience of viewers fervent enough to donate can't be as large as it once was, even with the growth of TBN's media presence.

It seems like the majority of TV evangelists have moved away from the "you're old and dying, and need to get right with the Lord" mantra, and are going for the "sew some (monetary) seeds, and get blessed with enormous wealth" line.
Maybe they feel that they can get younger people in that way.

I miss Billy Graham. Nice to see him in re-runs.

I think there are other issues involved here beyond just the age of viewers or changes in demographics.
There are a lot more religious broadcasters out there than there use to be. Daystar is pretty big and you can find a bunch of others out there populating the digital TV spectrum. TBN used to be "it" for most markets. Not anymore.

I caught a rerun of one of his specials while channel surfing last week. Might be the only programming I'd stick around for on TBN.
