Remakes

Okay so I have gone on record for blasting artists for doing cover tunes on new releases. Welp I just received new cd fro Russ Kunkel, Chateau Beach. Glanced at the cover and noticed all the remakes. First thought UGGHHHH! Last night son locks keys in his vehicle and I have an hour and half round trip to unlock his truck. Grabbed a couple new cds for the ride to preview. This cd is incredible and I can not stop listening. If you are going to do cover tunes this is the way to do it. Bill Withers classic "Lovely Day" blew me away and so on through the cd. Probably didn't hurt that Russ has laid down the beat for all the original versions he covers on this cd. Now I don't want to jinx the potential for remakes in the future of this caliber however Frank Cody praises the cd in the liners. I know I am not drifting in the BA direction and I am not sure if BA is drifting in my direction? :-[

*Disclaimer ------ Frank Cody comment is not intended to start a BA slamfest.

Hey Nock. Mark Whitfield's "Songs of Wonder" is decent too. Not sure if you have had a chance to check it out. While I too am not a huge fan of cover tunes in general, I'm OK with those where the artist is adept at infusing his/her interpretation of the song, and the vibe is good. Peter White has always been a master at doing this. I like just about every cover tune he has cut.

Another decent new remake is Elliot's rendition of the great Curtis Mayfield tune "Move On Up", a song I first heard almost 30 years ago that was used on the soundtrack of a dopey comedy film I had just seen titled "The Groove Tube" ::)

Located that song on Mayfield's classic LP "Curtis" which I purchased the next day and still have boxed away somewhere.

I've heard all the tracks y'all mention however Russ' track is in a league of it's own. When you actually have to pay close attention to pick up what tune is being covered. A very well put together cd.

I had to bite the bullet on Kunkel's "Lovely Day" too. That is a song I am mega tired of and I thought "oh please no." It blew me away.

But..here's why: He took the melodic framework of a song and turned it into an entirely different thing. Did anyone else think the underlying riff in the intro sounded a little like the intro to the original version of "Sun Goddess". The Elliot song is similar in that he took a song and put an original spin on it. Good song choice for a cover because it's not very recognizable and he rendered it completely unrecognizable..which is a good thing. Another rather obscure cover that works like that is Richard Smith's version of "Never Too Much" on his mid 90s "First Kiss" CD.

Great observations and it's good to know I'm not alone. I sometimes skip by familiar titles on some of the new releases. But Kunkel nailed the Withers tune! I also think The Sax Pack equally nailed "Tequila". I have a lot of respect for Marc Antoine's treatment of "Spooky" as well. I gave it a few repeat listens when I first bought his latest CD. Nice to be talking about great music again. I agree, no reason to talk about the "format" or BA. We know where that's gone. Let's keep up the talk about the great music that's out there and getting played on some great college stations and via Nock and AC. Not to mention the Internet stations. Pieces Of A Dream's new one is nice as is Nils' latest "Up Close And Personal." By the way, The Weather Channel rocks and I have the CDs they released. Awesome!

The Kunkel track that I'm going with on the Harmonic Lounge will be "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" with Mindi Abair. I'm also looking at "Carey" and "Mexico" as possibilities. A good cover or remake has a life and signature all its own. That's the only way they work!
