remember classic country 94.5?

i was recently thinking back to that station. i believe their motto was 'classic country from yesterday and today'

i believe it came on the air jan 2001 and lasted till early 2003?

why didnt it work? i liked the format. it was certainly different enough to distinguish itself from wtqr and wpcm.

or maybe im the odd one? perhaps i just like bad radio formats ;D

I'm not in your market..but, we have a rimshot FM (WGWD 93.3) in Quincy, Fla. that has successfully
broadcast a classic country format now for a number of years.

I use it on my internet station, which doesn't have big listening hours, but has somewhere around 950
"presets." It receives emails and correspondence on a regular basis.

Classic Country 94.5...I believe the call letters were WWCC. Seems like it came online when the rock format was removed from the former WXRA (94.5) and 100.3 the Buzzard was launched where Whistle 100 WHSL used to be. By this time, WPCM was an AM station playing beach music/oldies, as it is today. The former WPCM "Country 101" was, by this time, WKXU, the western half of the "Kix 96-9 and 101-1" simulcast before they split in February of 2001. History aside, Classic Country 94.5 was a decent station, but its basic purpose was to flank co-owned WTQR

youre right about 101.1 call letters. i had forgotten all about the marriage with kix.

speaking of 101.1, whatever happened to buddy michaels. he was there since the beginning. last i heard (which was a time ago) he was doing a bluegrass show at the country station in roxboro.

I heard of that station as the predecessor of WGBT, but by the time I first picked up 94.5, the station had become WGBT "94.5 The Beat." WWCC lasted from 2001 when they swapped signals and formats with WHSL "Whistle 100" (which became today's WVBZ "100.3 The Buzzard") until August 2003 when WWCC became WGBT "94.5 The Beat." That station then went espanol as "La Preciosa 94.5" in Feb. 2006--- the first of the umpteen gazillion format changes in both G'boro and Raleigh last year--- although they kept the WGBT calls despite the format change. The WGBT format change was the prelude to WFMX's sad demise five months later. I think the problem with The Beat was that they were competing against the wrong station. They would have done better pitted against 107.5 KZL as a Top-40 station rather than going against WJMH "102 Jamz," who pretty much has the hip-hop scene locked down in G'boro; in fact, we can even pick up 102 Jamz here in the Triangle, whereas 94.5's signal is blocked here by 94.7 QDR.

Poor Classic Country 94.5....The whole reason for its existence was to protect WTQR, and believe me, the WTQR salespeople made sure that's all it was going to do! WTQR had a large staff and none of them wanted that little station to succeed. I won't say that it was programmed badly, but it wasn't going to be a ratings winner for sure. What was really sad was to see CC kill WHSL (Whistle 100 - Country) which was actually becoming a viable station. Seems that the gameplan to protect WTQR was a good one considering what has happened with WPAW. 94.5 has been a lot of different formats, but I think La Preciosa is a keeper. They're doing really well with it. That signal was never very good, but the Hispanics will deal with the static. You can get Classic Country now on 98.3 Country Legends. Their signal isn't far-reaching, but it's a nice little station with quite a few listeners in this area. They also stream on-line.

There was an incarnation of WBBB in the mid 90's at 100.3 that was a mixture of Classic Hits/Classic Rock.

That station was WWBB, and was the successor on the frequency to Bernie Mann's WGLD.

Later....
Matt Smith
WGSR-TV

Actually, it was W-W-W-B (B-100FM). Was sure fun saying those calls over a satellite feed with the mix-minus set wrong and all those Ws coming back at you .. right Max??

I always thought they should have called that 3 W B.. My Buddy Tommy Walker did a stint there when it was WGLD..Boy he hated that! BIG APE!

Different enough, but they still played Faith Hill and Shania Twain. Country Legends 98.3 plays only the good stuff.

Okay, some of it is more pop than what's played today, but at least it's old.

I really thing a 70s, 80s, 90s, today country format would be successful - with an emphasis on the REALLY CLASSIC songs of each era - and ONLY the biggest current hits. Play some of those "Oh Wow" classics in the old Blue Moon rotation! Otherwise, the format goes the way of Beautiful Music and Rock and Roll Oldies as the audience grows older.

I thought I was the only person who had that memory seared into his brain ... those headphones couldn't come off fast enough! Poor folks at Disney thought my head had caught fire!

Hey Bernie!
Don't forget that when you close the sale of KIX and WYYD please don't take any equipment with you on your way out. That includes the Scullys. Ha!
