I just don't get it.
The station is not going by "NBC3" ...anymore. When they first became the Bay Area's NBC affiliate, they had managed to get the coveted channel 3 position on all the local cable systems (and some satellite, I understand). I guess the decision was to publicize the cable channel position, not the over-the-air channel 11 position.
But after a year or so, reportedly due to the confusion in the North Bay with KCRA, they decided to use "NBC11." I guess because KCRA was their first, so to speak. After a couple of years of NBC11, they decided to brand as "NBC Bay Area" - no channel mentioned. They've been doing that for a couple of years now.
With great nostalgia I recall in the mid-to-late seventies and on into the eighties whenever hanging out with my aunt & uncle who lived in Moraga, they had cable television which offered your choice of NBC stations: Either KCRA 3 from Sacramento, or KRON 4 from San Francisco. I do believe that it was always "on" (not selective programming, or blacked-out slots of shows a-la Syndex.) Around that same time period, Bakersfield cable television systems (Warner Cable, and COX) had similar offerings: You could watch NBC from KNBC 4 from Los Angeles, or closer to home, the local NBC affiliate (which at that time was KERO 23, which was carried on cable channel 8.) Ahhhh the good 'ol days...

In Marin County in the 70s, Viacom cable carried the 3 Sacramento stations - 3, 10 and 13. IIRC, Viacom did the same in San Francisco in the 80s, but was required to carry local SF news, so they would carry KRON 4 News on 3, KPIX News on 13, etc.
The good old days. My cable system in Stockton carried not only the Sacramento Stations but also the further away Bay Area TV Stations. By 1981, My cable company carried the following Bay Area TV Stations: KTVU-2, KRON-4, KPIX-5, KGO-7, KQED-9, KDTV-14, KTZO-20 (now KOFY), KTSF-26, KQEC-32 (now KMTP), KICU-36, KVOF-38 (now KCNS) and KBHK-44 (now KBCW).Now we are down to KRON-4, KQED-9, KOFY-20 and KICU-36. Tomorrow Comcast will be dropping KRON so we will be down to 3 Bay Area TV Stations. The good old days are almost gone from cable tv here.Lkeller said:
