would change the names of incoming jocks to fit the station and market? The small market of Terre Haute, now has three jocks, on three different stations with the last name "Michaels".
While that may be true, I think nationally known personalities are different than jocks starting at small, local radio stations. Chances are, the locals didn't know them if they previously worked in Rochester, Rockford, or Raliegh.
I don't think it is that big of a deal. They all have different first names, and depending on the impending WBOW format change, they will all be on different types of formats.
Any more if you were a PD & tried that you'd be sued for racism or defamation of character for not wanting someone's on air presence to sound like, for example...
"Hi, I'm Egbert Bigscreemovitch plowin' through the hits"
or "I'm Arms Boomerang broadcasting at the AM 800 O.P.P booth"
or "I'm Malcolm X O.J Simpson Thomas ready to give you another hour of enlightening spiritual music"
Anyone ever notice how many weekend specilaty show air talents have the last name Sullivan? WHAS has one, WIBC has one & there's a syndicated show carried on some Clear Channel outlets that has one...they're usually focused on home repairs or gardening.
Here in the Evansville area we had a "Rusty James" war. In the late nineties, Rusty James (now PD of The Wolf) arrived at WKDQ. He left for former cross town rival WYNG. Brill Media temporarily filled the position with 96STO night jock Rusty Sharp who had given notice he was leaving for St Louis after his wedding. Rusty was told he would be Rusty James on KDQ. So for a couple of books there were two Rusty James doing afternoon country radio in Evansville. Oh, let's not forget at the same time there was Jeanie James doing afternoons on country WBKR.
