Remember the Pru-Fire, 1987?

Hey, anyone remember this? I believe it happened on a Thursday, 2 floors in the Prudential building caught on fire, and all the radio stations that braodcast from their (WEEI, in particular) had to evaculate and move for that night.

Anyone else remember this?

1986. 1 floor - 14th. weei was back in their 44th floor studio the same
night.

When that fire hit at the Pru, WZOU program director Pat McKay and I flagged down the WHTT van in Copley Square and told them they could use our studios at 441 Stuart St. We had them broadcasting out of my production room at the ZOU. It was a strange day.

Any other details? I've never heard of this happening, probably because I was living in southern Maine at the time.

As I recall WVBF was in the process of moving into the PRU from Mt Wayte Ave in Framingham when the fire occurred. I thought it was on the 13th floor.

it all ties in to wrko, don't you see?! rod fritz/wrko who was at
'eei at that time was one of the people admitted to the hospital
for inaling all the smoke...from the fire.

the pru was built was without a sprinkler system if you can
believe it. the cheap insurance company finally installed one
after that fire.

LOL. I watched with horror thru the production window as the entire studio filled up with fire extinguisher white! All that dust settled into the production room gear I had to use. A few months later when the new owners moved us out to Congress Street I swapped the Harmonizer and compressors wit the ones from the HDH production studio, and took the clean ones.. Little did I know 6 months later I'd land at HDH using that same tainted stuff I had swapped!!!!! Who was Harry wrestling with in the studio, I can see it but don't remember who it was. :)

Was Fritz with WEEI then? I thought I remember him with Greater Media at that time, doing news on WMJX, and their former AM oldies station 1150 WMEX.

Does the Pru even have a 13th floor? Urban legend has it that they skipped it.

Snopes, anyone?

MR

Yes, I remember Rob Fritz trying to get through his newscast and choking.

Incredible Bob, you were truly great. I heard from Ellen Dolgins recently, she lives on Long Island. She said Heidi was no where to be found. I remember Heidi telling us how she spent lots of time with rock stars and no one believed her..that is till Mike Love of the Beach Boys walked into the lobby and asked "Which one's Heidi?" :) I also remember a high school remote you did where the principal flat out refused to announce you as "Incredible". Even though you explained "That's my freakin name!"

yea, he was at both places that year. he jumped from weei to magic a
few months after the pru fire. the new greater media boss redo was
pd at magic then. rod ran magic's news office and then also oversaw monkey
busniess format on am before moving over to 'hdh in the early 90s where
i was selling.

I remember when 1150 WMEX was business radio for one year after they dropped Oldies in 1989, and before it went simulcast/brokered... I think it was actually the first all-business format in Boston, before WBNW, WBIX, etc..

They had some great liners which Fritz used to voice. My favorite one went something like:

"You've just eaten your Power Breakfast, and you just put on your Power Tie!
Now, the Business News you need to Power your day...Business Radio 1150!"

old mailing address for 105.7 WCLB/WKLB/WROR was 1313 Prudential Tower

on the elevator - you press button "13" and get off for the studios

seems to me it exists.
