Remember these People?

here are some Jocks I remember listening too when I was a kid growing up in the 70's-80's. I'm leaving off the ones already mentioned. I wonder what became of some of these people. some may be dead or maybe they got a haircut and got a real job. Anyone remember these people?

Jeff Hester-WSLI, George Florence-WSLI, John Bell-WSLI(Walt and John Show) "Wendy"-WYYN 96 (Walt and Wendy Show) Nelson Wiley-JDX, Nancy Bell ("The Flying J.)-JDX, Buffalo Chip Matthews-Z-106, 98 Rock, K-Rock 1550, Sebastion-ZZQ, Trouper-ZZQ, "Roscoe on the Radio"-TYX, "Cruiser"-TYX, (Was Roscoe Kimbrough?, and was Cruiser Bill Crews?, Jim Chick-JDX, TYX, Wayne Scott-JDX, Tianna?-Z-106 (90's), Bruce Poose-TYX (Ok, I just threw that one in), Keven Vandenbrook-ZZQ, Rock 102, "Heavy" Herb Anderson-13KXI, WAPT. Lee Adams-JDX, Brock Broulete-Owens-1590 CCL, 96.3, 98,7 and nearly every other station in town)Hillbilly Willie-WKYV 106.7, WOKJ when it was country, WQST AM?, There are more but I can't remember the names right off the bat. And last, one nobody will remember. From the old WMDC in Hazelhurst. M. Jones??? or something like that. He also worked for a while at WOKJ around 1989 when It was briefly a rock station. He had a real "country" sounding Voice. Oh I forgot, one more. The guy that was "The Voice" of WSJC in Magee back in the 70's. He was ususally on in the morninig, can't recall his name.

The Jones you remember from WMDC in Hazlehurst was Mal Jones. As for WSJC, since you refer to the person in question as "the voice", you're probably referring to Randy Blakeney (or possibly Bob Kidd). Also...Brock Broulette Owens got his start at WMDC in Hazlehurst. Prior to their demise, they still occasionally played a Top of Hour ID that Brock cut YEARS ago. The only Lee Adams I'm familiar with is actually now Rick Adams from Miss 103. He went by Lee Adams when he worked at WKNZ in Collins and at SL100 in Hattiesburg prior to moving to Jackson market.

Yep your right, it was Mal Jones, I thought it was Mal but wasn't quite sure. I used to hear him on the radio when I visited my grandma in Wesson. It was a big surprise when I recognized his voice on a heavy metal station (K-Rock 1550)
I don't the Lee Adams I'm thinking of is the same as Rick Adams. The one I'm thinking of worked for 62JDX. When WTYX finally chunked the tape machine and went live, Lee Adams left JDX and did nights at TYX. TYX was still pretty much automated at the time with live jocks certain times of the day. This was around 1981 or so. Before the age of the Dawnbusters. I happened to catch a skip of 93QID on the coast one night and heard Lee Adams after he left TYX. The last time I heard him on the radio, he was calling a ballgame play by play. I believe it was on the old WYJS 105.9 when it was still a christian station.

Lee moved to Reno, NV a few years ago. He did do high school football play-by-play, but I don't remember which one. He was on the Mississippi High School Scoreboard Show a few years when Russ Robinson hosted it and Lee was on there telling Russ what he was doing at the time.<P ID="signature">______________

I can help you with a few:

> "Roscoe on the Radio"-TYX,

Is he still in Natchez at 95 Country?

> Wayne Scott-JDX

Last I knew of him, he had his own mobile DJ service. A few years ago, I was driving down 220 and saw a sign on his SUV advertising the service.

> Keven Vandenbrook

The last thing I remember was him being former governor Ray Mabus' press secretary.

> "Heavy" Herb Anderson-13KXI,

Herb found God and became a minister. It was not too long after WKXI went to 107.5. Not sure which church, but it's not Anderson United Methodist Church (sounded logical, though).

> Brock Broulete-Owens-1590 CCL, 96.3, 98.7 and nearly every other station in town)

You're right about that! Brock went to work for a real estate firm in the Florida Panhandle under the name Graham Jasper.

I worked at WSLI/WYYN back in the early 80's during the reign of Osborn/Reynolds (shudder). George Florence was fired by them and I believe he passed away sometime within a couple of years after that. John Bell (Williams) left Jackson and went to Birmingham and at last report was in Mobile running his own production house. He is a comic and production genius. He can still be heard on the Rush Limbaugh show with the old Bungee Condom spots among others.

While talking about whatever happened to...how about Randy Thompson, John Hoffman and Jim Bevers?

Rick

I do recall Rick Adams saying that when he moved to Jackson to start at 103, there was already a Lee Adams in the market (or had been) and that's why he changed his name to Rick.

You mentioned WSJC. Who remembers James Lavelle? He went by Lavelle on the AM and mispronounced almost everything...For-in-der (Foreigner); 'Lectric Lite Awk-stra (Electric Light Orchestra), The Beagles (Beatles), etc.

He went by James Meyers (his real name was James Lavelle Meyers) on the FM and played country...Merril Haggred (Merle Haggard), Reber McIntosh (Reba McIntire), etc.

His weather was a Hoot! Stunderthorms and a chance of rang in Magee and surrounding A-ras.

That sounds like my kind of DJ. I get a big kick when they do that.
Rush Limbaugh also does stuff like that just for a joke and to annoy newer listeners who don't get the references. He calls Gordon Lightfoot-Gordon Lightweight, School-Screwel, Ask-Axe, Al Gore-Algore etc.

Someone on Z-106 (I think it was Perez) used to say Dead Zeppelin and Slee-zy Top. Funny Stuff

Well improper english may not be right for the radio, but it is still funny. Remember how everyone sounded on WRKN? I sometimes wonder if the Harrises would seek out people that sounded "country" Roy Harris (rip) was a hoot. Along with his wife and daughter sounded very very "local" but thats what I liked about them. They didn't sound like "big city folk". They sounded like one of us. These small town stations never sounded professional, but who cares, they sounded neighborly. I sometimes wish stations would dump the computers bring that type of radio back. It was actually more entertaining than the slick sounding stuff heard on the cookie cutter stations.
