They were also still airing the Brandon Cash and Carry ad that Roy did many moons ago. The old tapes were nearly worn out. I think he died in 1989 . I met him once, used to see him around town, he and his wife were the real deal, really nice folks. By the way, WRKN has been off the air since Mrs Harris retired on Dec. 31, anybody know if this station will ever be back on the air?

I worked with Nelson at 62JDX. He did all-nights when I came back to do 10 to 2 as his warm-up act. Nelson also did one-arm push-ups while on the air. I believe, like myself, he was originally from Greenville.

Lee Adams got his start as a caller to Gary Phillip's all-night weirdos on JDX. As a teenager, he started doing weekends (the Sunday tape shift) and would aircheck his weather breaks for my "expert" critique. I hired him to do nights at Y-16 (after Graham Jasper got ticked off and quit 'cause I wouldn't let him be "Brock Boulette"). I don't blame him, as I was really a pain to work for. My own brother quit and went to work for WSLI! John Bell came in from Clarksdale to take Walt's place doing mornings at Y-16, then they did afternoons together at SLI, probably as the replacement for Bob and Al. Lee went on to do nights at 62, then high school play-by-play, and on into all-sports radio out west.

I've just got to get it written down somewhere before Alzheimer's sets in. Notice I already had to edit it because I got part of it wrong.

Well, well. Let's see here.
Worked with John Bell at WSLI..Wendy at WYYN (WIN 96!)...Gave Tiana a job in Columbus, MS (Z-100)...Worked for Brock Boulette (Grahm Jasper) at 15-JFL Vicksburg, 96X (Country...soon to become WYYN), WCCL-AM, WYYN, etc., etc...and if you're talking about M. Jones, that's probably Mark Jones, "Slick Eddie" Chastain. He's now putting on a station in Vicksburg after selling his station in Bunkie, Louisana (Alexandria).
But do you remember Super Shannon, Doc Bross (Boulette), Peter (Boulette) Christian and the rest of the gang at WRBC? Did you hear the story about Super Shannon threatning to quit if he couldn't get a large wooden cat put on the tower (North State Street) so he could call WRBC "The Rockin' Big Cat"? Hahaha! Has anyone told you about the radio wars between WRBC, W-One (WWUN) and WJDX? Jackson radio used to be the best in the South and one of the best in the nation. Just ask "Uncle" Walt Greyson.

Your "M. Jones" was indeed Mal Jones at WMDC in Hazlehurst. I know because he hired me to work afternoons. But first he took me to lunch at a cafe on the square in Hazlehurst. Mal's one big claim to fame is that he once did a voicer that aired nationally on NBC.

He was G.M. at WMDC and the one ad salesperson. His 2 to 3 minute long commercials with hideous sound effects was what I remember the most.

You could buy a 10 second spot on WMDC for 25 cents. Really.

Both Jeff Hester and George Florence (WSLI) died many years ago. I think I am the only
survivor from WSLI. I have had emails from Jim Chick and Grady (SuperShannon) Brock within the
last year. Nancy Bell left 62/JDX in 78 or so and went to Baton Rouge. Roscoe = Dave Kinbrough,
Tianna is in Jackson in another business not broadcast related.
Jackson radio had some really good talent come through in the 70s and early 80s. Just in the short time I was GM at WRBC: Harry Nelson, Walt Grayson, Super Shannon. At the same time, Tanner has his line up
at JDX...and you know the rest of that story.

You're right about that! Brock went to work for a real estate firm in the Florida Panhandle under the name Graham Jasper.
That's his real name.

(Added later: Ummm... should have read the thread a little farther...)

I wondered what happened to her. I remember when I was leaving JDX in 1975 for St. Louis, she told me she had lived there and that I would like it. I was there 30 years. She must have known something.

WOKJ when it was country

WOKJ was COUNTRY? YIKES! When was that. It's been AGES since I was back in Jackson.

It was country for a short time around 1989 IIRC. I remember hearing "Hillbilly" Willie Harrell as one of the announcers. Country didn't last too long... they went to "K-Rock" after that... then off the air for good.

Nancy Bell left 62/JDX in 78 or so and went to Baton Rouge.

When Nancy left, JDX had a roast for her. All the folks from the police department was there and a ton of listeners who won tickets. It was a full dinner, followed by the roast. The thing I remember most about the night was when the city of Jackson gave her a street sign with her name on it.

Nancy dated the police dept.,didn't she?
Okay, kidding. And no, she wasn't Randy Bell's mother!

Well I worked with alot of those people over the years! I do the mobile DJ thing along with Great Scott Productions..a VO business I have here at home! Some of those folks I'd rather forget to be honest..heheh and some were great to work with-Randy Bell and Rick Adams in particular.! Nelson Wiley was quite a challenge to manage for sure, as were others along the way but after 25 years in radio-I do not miss it at all and have no desire to go back on the air.

MILT!!!!!!! WHEREYA AT!!!!!!

Originally, the radio station in Hazlehurst was located at 97.7.

Then, it switched with a radio station in Utica that was 92.9.

It is now broadcasting ESPN Radio.

I liked the old format (oldies rock and roll - the same that 780AM used to play in Jackson) better.

jboydingram said:
I don't believe the original frequency was 97.7....there would be short spacing with WTYJ, Fayette and WRJH Brandon...No? JBI

That is correct. Hazlehurst started out at 100.9, but there was a complicated frequency swap arrangement around 1998-99 where Hazlehurst ended up with 92.9, Utica ended up with 100.9 and Vicksburg ended up with 101.1.

Utica and Vicksburg were able to upgrade from their original class A status. Hazlehurst remained a class A.

No telling how much time Don Brady spent figuring this out!
