I have no idea if this is a good place to look but I have to start somewhere. Back around 1990 there was a station on the air called ZROCK (sp?). I'm pretty sure it was based out of Texas but was broadcast in Colorado on 560 AM. The station was great; great metal/rock and hilarious commercials and skits. I'd love to have a couple of hours worth of recorded airtime of this station. Am I dreaming? Is there a source or am I reduced to looking for likely non-existant bootleg cassette tapes on eBay? I'm a serious nostalgia junkie when it comes to my formative teenage years and have been thinking about this for a while. Any ideas on where to look for something like this would be very helpful. I don't come here on a regular basis so any replies can be directed to [email protected] subject: ZROCK

ZRock was syndicated by ABC Radio Networks in Dallas...It went off the sat in 1996 or 97...There were other stations still running the ZROCK format even after it left the satellite...Squeege (who is on Radio Disney if memory serves) was one of the DJs on ZROCK (go figure!)...You might try contacting him via his email at RD and see if he or someone else he knows has tapes of the old ZROCK...

Zrock was a pretty good satellite format. I liked it for the crazy personality DJ's like Mad Max Hammer. Some of the Jocks reminded me of the old Top 40 teen DJ's of the 1970's.Despite being on two rimshot FM's in DFW (94.5 and 99.1) it did have a small but very loyal audiance. But when grunge hit big in 1991 the format started losing metal fans to Nirvana and Pear Jam. Z-Rock tried evolving into a hard alternative rock format but it never did click, and I think the last years for the format was in 1995-6.

Although I was like ten years old at the time My sister listened to it and got me hooked to it.Now If Dallas can get the old Edge back but that may be next to impossible

In addition to 94.5 and 99.1 in Dallas, Z-Rock was also on in Houston on 106.9 and 1070, San Antonio on 760, and I think Amarillo on 107.1 or 107.9.

Funny thing was the console in the ABC RN studios....had many razor blade cuts in its wood...and it wasnt because of cutting tape, either; hhmmmmmm ;)I remember the night ZROCK signed off.......it was a tearful event......there were 3 of the jocks there in the studio...and everyone else in other studios were listening to the goodbye on their monitors..lt lasted 15 mins longer than it should...

ZROCK was also in Chicago on WZRC 106.7 FM and Jacksonville FL on WFYV 1460AM. ZROCK was in it's element during the late 80's and early 90s.

I too would love to get a hold of some old tapes of that network. I might still have some from when I was in Jacksonville...and Chicago before that.

We had it here In Jackson, MS on WZRX 1590 AM stereo briefly in the late 80's in AM stereo. Sounded good. It was also on WRNO in New Orleans which if you may remember used to simulcast it on their shortwave station which literally went out world wide. I used to listen to it on shortwave whenever I could pick it up. i read that it ocassionally turned up in the ratings books in far away places, which totally confused the arbitron people. and I'm sure annoyed the local stations. But it was cool hearing some headbanging on the shortwave band, which ususually has only preachers these days. By the way, whatever happened to WRNO worldwide, the last time i heard it was in the 90's and all it had was some preachers, crackpots, and spanish. is it dark?
