Remembering Gary Todd & the other WIBC jocks

With the imminent move of WIBC from its' historical position of 1070 (or "ten-seven-oh"), and the recent departure of Jeff Pigeon, it is worth noting that WIBC had some GREAT on-air personalities over the years.

Much has been made of the rock & roll years with Bouncin' Bill Baker.

My best memories are from the "Full Service" years (approx. 1967-1988) when they were owned by Fairbanks Broadcasting and programmed by Jim Hilliard. I think of these were the years when WIBC become an Indiana institution. Who can forget the Heller jingles that Dick Hamilton wrote for all of the Fairbanks stations, including WIBC and WNAP?

And some of you may already know this, but Gary Todd is back on the air after spending 10 years as a program producer! He is GM and morning host at an AM station on the Treasure Coast of Florida (Jupiter, Port St. Lucie), where he has been living for the last 10 years after leaving WXXP, Experience 98 - the Anderson/Indianapolis station he owned for approx. 6 years. He streams online, too..and is sounding better than ever. The show is still called "Gary's Place" and the station uses the "America's Best Music" satellite AC/MOR format most of the day, except Gary's show. It is located at www.seaview960am.com. The station just launched a short while ago. Gary owned Indianapolis during the 70's and early to mid 80's. If I recall, his departure was as much, if not more awkward, then Jeff Pigeon's was.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of some of the other IBC jocks, especially those during the Fairbanks period? Orly Knutson works with Emmis, of course. Jerry Baker is still around doing various things. Chuck Riley was on the air for quite a few years before going out west. Anyone hear anything about David Appleford? They also had a couple of great overnight hosts, when they played music all night - I cannot remember their names. One was a male with a very deep voice, the other a female.

Todd was not the owner of WXXP but reportedly spent lots of Dennison's money. They ended up okay selling a 1 mil station for 6 million to Moody who has more money than...well you know.

Todd wasn't an exciting jock with a great banter. Just filled the holes. His leaving was no big deal. Pidgeon wasn't that hot either. Not horrible but both filled holes in the elements. The combination was what won.

Reb Porter is still in town. Bob Richards? Kevin O'Neal? (Let me in or I'm gonna shoot ya?)Leigh DeNoon? (Farming?)

Chuck Riley passed away this summer after years of national voice work. Kevin O'Neal has been a reporter for The Star for some time. He also has worked as a track announcer at the Speedrome.

Best at WIBC- Reb Porter(mid days) with farm director Harry Andrews..complete with all his reminices of "Stinky" Irwin and other down home humour

Best at WNAP-Buster Bodine

I remember hearing Chuck Riley's I.D. for Emmis Power 106 in LA. That booming voice "72,000 WATTS OF MUSIC POWER" -insert some chick saying "LESS TALK" Riley again "K-P-W-R LOS ANGELES...POWER 106!"

:) in LA, 72000 watts would be an underpowered dinky station...

A couple of corrections:
Chuck Riley passed away in May 2007 at the age of 66. Orly Knutson left B105.7 and has retired from radio after 50 years in the business. Don Riley (no relation to Chuck) was the last overnight air personality on WIBC before the station switched to Bruce Williams and NBC's Talknet in 1983.
