Rest of Arizona Remembering Globe-Miami's KIKO

The article ignores a key detail; namely, after KIKO was purchased in 2008, the transmitter and license were moved to APache Junction in hopes of getting east valley listeners. Much like what happened at KSIQ (96.1 mHz) when *that* station moved closer to San Diego to try to get more listeners there, the whole thing backfired, and, making KIKO's situation worse, it was an AM station at a time when AM listenership, especially in the big cities, was declining. Frankly, I think that the AM would have had a much better shot if it had stayed in Miami. Keep in mind that the only other local AM outlet there, KJAA (the former KWJB), was being used by the owner as her personal oldies jukebox. If KIKO-AM had stayed in Globe, it could have offered a counterweight to what Rollye James was doing at KJAA!

As far as personal memories of KIKO go, hearing "NBC Monitor" on the station during 1973 and 1974 when we were at Roosevelt Lake; hearing KIKO-FM in mono when it began airing in 1979 (I thought it was later) from my house with gossipy but interesting local reports from Carol in Punkin Center, a tiny community on the northwest side of Roosevelt Lake; hearing (and taping music from) an oldies show on Sunday evenings that played some incredible stuff I used to hear growing up in Los Angeles; and much more.

And now it's turned off forever. RIP KIKO!

Rollye James also owns KQSS 101.9 Globe It has a full service Country format that supplies all of the tocal news, community info, and was a lifeline during the big flooding that occurred earlier this winter. Thanks to Rollye, the area has both a locally focused FM and a well curated Oldies outlet. The Cobre Valley is doing just fine without KIKO.

A little more about Rollye from the WGN Radio website. She does the 10 PM to 1 AM show weekdays on WGN from her studio in Globe.
