It's been a year since Hy Lit passed away. Hy survived so many station and management changes over the years to remain part of the soundtrack of the Delaware Valley as the 'potentate of the Keystone, Garden & Diamond States". My knowledge of the music of the 1960's started with Hy Lit - not even listening to the radio directly, but through my older sister studying at the kitchen table every night with Hyski playing on Wibbage. Somehow I remembered all the songs - AND Hy's patter and jingles. I started listening myself and remember the night in 1968 when suddenly Wibbage was gone, replaced by the Big 99. Then Hyski came back in that great 1969 era with Joe Niagara, Joey Reynolds, John Landecker & Ed Richards. Then Hy was gone again from WIBG until the Wake in 1977, and later very briefly on WPEN, on WTRT, WKXW, WRCP, WSNI, WPGR and WOGL. What a ride.
Years ago I was laid off from a job and it took over 10 years to get over the bitterness to talk with anyone involved with that company. So I understand how Hy and Sam felt about Hy's last years at WOGL. I bring that up because word was Harvey Holiday & Tommy McCarthy had produced a tribute to Hy that never aired a year ago. Remembering the years of dialogue between these 3 guys on WPGR and WOGL, I hope someday we can hear that tribute or at least some produced audio tribute to Hy.
If there was a sliver lining in the clouds of those last days on WOGL, it's the fact that in some ways it contributed to Hy & Sam starting HyLitRadio.com giving us not a memorial to Hy but a living, ongoing tribute that he helped create and voice!
Thanks Hy for all the memories - as you wished with Wibbage, we wish you continued rest in peace.
