Remembering Joe Waldman (WHIO / WTVN)

According to the above link, Joe Waldman passed away in 2003. Perhaps some of you have memories of him to share.

I remember back in the mid 80's discussing Joe with then WHIO PD, Mike Scott. I mentioned to Mike that Joe (then at WTVN) used to work for WHIO and would be an excellent addition to our staff. I found out a few days later that Joe was coming to WHIO to co-host mornings along with Lou Emm.

Joe, as I recall, was very smooth on the air, always the consummate professional. I never realized what a historian he was.
 
Oddly I was just thinking about Joe the other day. Never knew him. Just remember listening to him on the air.

I seem to remember the documentry shows, I believe historic in nature, running on WTVN in the late 60's. Maybe on Sunday evenings. He left the station about that time only to return several years later to do afternoons, maybe after Conners left afternoons for mornings. It wasn't too long after that he showed up on the morning show on WHIO.
 
I wanted to check with people at the station here before I posted to make sure my memory was serving
me correctly...

Joe was actually at WHIO a couple of times. The first time, he was the afternoon drive host, leaving after a few years to go first to WIBC in Indy...then to WTVN. He later returned to team with Lou Emm, then was moved back to afternoon drive for a while before he left to go to L.A. where he did voice work and was on the original "Music Of Your Life" satellite network, or so I'm told here.

Excellent voice...and excellent talent.
 
I remember Joe Waldman on WKRC Radio in Cincinnati in 1969. He had a nice one-on-one sound. He also used to talk to and about an off-mike assistant named Dave Shackman.
 
Joe was a good friend of mine when he joined Unistar to program The Music of your Life. Also worked part time at KMPC after MOYL went out of business. Got married to his Ohio COX air sidekick Dawn Smellalot or some name like that. Joe was a super great guy and we miss you man!
 
When I worked at Kool 95/WPTW in Piqua, Joe was a weekender on Westwood One's Adult Standards format (sometimes known as "AM Only"). I did promos about our "Miami Valley radio Legend" who worked for us

I helped launch both 'AM Only' and Unistar's version of the "Music Of Your Life' and never remember Joe working with that format. There is nothing on the Internet to support this although I was not with them during the WW1 days. What year were you at WPTW?
 
Between late 1996 and 1998, where I primarily worked on the air at Kool 95. This would have been early 1998, when I was the "lighthouse keeper" while Cox was trying to spin off the AM.

Joseph Waldman, 66, of Cambridge, died Wednesday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born Dec. 17, 1936 in Defiance, to Joseph and Dorothy (Lang) Waldman. Survivors include three sons, Christopher Waldman of Columbus, Peter Waldman of Los Angeles, and Matthew Waldman of Lancaster, Calif.; a daughter, Darla Ottolenghi of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Jim Waldman of Defiance; five sisters, Karen (Richard) Odenweller of Delphos, Mary Ann (John) Dray of Palm Coast, Fla., and Susie Flores, Jane (Joseph) Imber and Nancy (Jon) Eickenberg of Defiance; and three great grandchildren. He worked in radio broadcasting. He started his career at WNOW in Defiance in 1959. He also worked at WBEC in Pittsfield, Mass., WTVN in Columbus and WHIO in Dayton. During his stint at WTVN he wrote and produced historic documentaries and was a recipient of two George Washington Medals from Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pa for his insight program on "The Age of Dissent", "The Story of Valley Forge" and "The Stars and Stripes". He received a citation from the Ohio State Institute for Education by Radio-Television for his documentary "The Road to Pearl Harbor", as well as commendations from the FBI and B'nai B'rith for his study of Soviet Communism that was read in its entirety into the Congressional Record. He graduated from Ayersville High School and Defiance College, where he received the Fred Peterson History Award. Private Graveside Services will be Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Defiance, the Rev. Rick Refenacht officiating. There is no visitation.

Not mentioned in the obit was a stint at WKRC from Jan of 69 to July of 70. He was originally production guy and then took over middays when Jerry Thomas was promoted to afternoons on the resignation of Allen Browning. Leaving WKRC led to Joe's first sting at WHIO.

Probably fat fingered typo.

There was no mention of the California or network work that has been mentioned up-thread. I found nothing in the radio stuff I have access to. Sometimes obits are tailored to lower cost and certain elements of a person's life are left out.
