Remembering the country station KYLO in Davis, CA

This is “the boy named tsu” who did the 6pm to midnight show and was the first music director. “Grass roots radio” was based on KFAT radio out of gilroy. It was mostly automated except the morning show with Steve robinson (He eventually became an astronaut). We recorded the music on reel to reel tapes and recorded voice tracks on cartridges. A computer synced the voice tracks with the music…most of the time. :) Some of the other dj’s were “ranger russ” Tolman who formed the band “true west”. There was also Glenn Davidson and Gordy.

The station was “grass roots radio”, “the armadillo on your dial” and “pure pork radio.” The station broadcasted out of a 30 foot room with a small studio on one end. The bathroom was outside. It was near putah creek and the radio tracks. The tower was in Dixon on Pedrick road near hwy 80. Great times until the egos got in the way.

KVMR just finished a membership drive. Last Saturday we did a 3-hour special honoring the legacy of KFAT. We got a call from someone who remembered KYLO. I've also heard from others who used to listen. Including the driver of a pickup truck spotted in downtown Nevada City. You'll appreciate the fact that one of these is still attached to a registered, moving vehicle:

In the mid to late 70's I lived in Salinas and became addicted to KFAT and when I moved back up here I found salvation when KYLO went in the air. Yes I still have my Armadilla on yer dial t-shirt somewhere. Interesting you mentioned your automation. I remember visiting KRBT- K-Robot in Woodland, probably in 1970. Fully automated the owner told me this is radio's future. Wasn't that long til the station became KSFM. Love radio, my father was in radio for years unfortunately I never made it past KDVS.
