Remembering WOKZ 1570

In an earlier post I mentioned listening to St. Louis Radio back in the late 1960s. There was one station I always checked out: WOKZ 1570. There was a WOKZ FM as well, licensed to Alton. As I recall about 1967 to 1969 was a pretty standard Middle of the Road or MOR station.

If you have a vivid memory or two, would you please share? Thanks.

WOKZ AM and FM were a simulcast, doing an MOR format through the 1970s. The AM was a daytimer, protecting XERF. The FM (on 100.3 MHz) continued with the same music through midnight, and covered local sports. On New Years Eve 1978-9, the FM was sold to the owners of KATZ St. Louis, and the new call letters were WZEN. There was an all night disco mix of music until 6 AM New Years Day. At first the format was adult contemporary, but by April, the station switched to disco, and were known as "Disco 100." In 1980, the mix focused on dance music and Top-40, and by 1981 the station became more of an album oriented version of R&B.

WOKZ continued with its format until 1984 when it was sold to a different owner. The call letters were changed to WBGZ. First the station played country, then shifted to a mix of country and AC, and went 24 hours in 1986 or 1987. By 1989, WBGZ settled into a talk format, where it continues today.
