Reminder of what AM could sound like....

Today, I visited the studios of an AM that I'll soon be engineering. The AM plays music. While inspecting the board, I noticed how outstanding the program bus sounded (or I thought) . I then noticed that the monitor selector switch was in the "air" position, not the pgm position. Further inspection showed that I was listening to the full-bandwidth audio feed from the modulation monitor. It was somewhat depressing as I thought about how good AM could sound, given the proper receiver..... It was sad really....

Know what you mean...I had an AM station that played oldies using a CRL Amigo processor...it sounded SO dang good coming out of the mod monitor in the studio...

I know what a shock! I'll bet the processor is analog too... say what you want about digital for FM, nothing has beaten a 9100 yet, which would be my choice for audio if I started or inherited a station tomorrow.

Yes, in fact, the processor is analog--an older Inovonics. It sounded very close to mono FM. Had sad it is that we don't have receivers capable of quality AM. I think people would be shocked if they heard AM through a mod monitor....

They would be shocked if they heard a good AM car radio from the 1960s.

I'll take the sound of a good AM signal and radio over FM any day, especially in the car.
Multipath noise sounds worse to me than AM's "flaws".

There is a nice mod to the PMC-450 CRL AM limiter that lowers the threshold of limiting so that more peak control is dealt with by the limiter... makes an OK box sound awesome.

Boy, can you ever say that again! As many times as you can stand repeating it! And I think that the way you've put it, it's an understatement.

I run a CRL MBL-100 on our locally programmed Classic Country 1KW..
It rolls off at 7.5khz....
Whether on my GE Superradio or right off the mod monitor, it's a nice sounding signal...
The coverage is good too....
Moderation regarding the settings is the bottom line...finding the edge...
Now if there was just a few more radios out there capable of hearing it.....

Finding the edge...very true. The best view occurs as close to the edge of the mountaintop as you can get without falling off...same logic applies to audio processing. It's a talented engineer who can straddle that narrow line.
