Okay, this about Renda and its stations. Just look at it Renda has intresting cluster of stations in this market that a lot of people fail to see including ones on this board (for the ones on this board you know who you are). Renda is leaning towards the family-friendly formats that are important to the everyday working society who has a family and a modest home. Renda cares about the working person unlike some other radio companies in Jax.
Here is what I see about each station and what this means for Jax.
WEJZ Lite 96.1-A good AC station. This is the only AC station in Jacksonville catering to the adults who need a little bit softer music especially in the afternoons for those who work and have to make the commute home. We know that not everyone listens to Lite, but the ratings hold true that people in Jax like Lite.
WGNE 99.9 The Gator-This CC worst nightmare. Renda has taken this station on a 180 turn and has taken country music in Jacksonville to a new twist. First you bring in Dixie (former CC worker at WROO), then you start mixing the new country with some of the older hits (people in Jax have begging for this for years and now they have it), then they bring the summer concert series back (CC hates that idea, Renda see it as a way to bring people to the Landing, get more listerners and the ratings will go up). Also Renda has a young program director who knows what country music is and see where its going. The jock lineup makes perfect sense, since they know what is going on in the world of country music. Like someone said on this board WROO will be burnt toast and feather all over the ground in six months. WROO will end up stunting with Christmas music by the end of November giving us a clear siging that they have raised the white flag to Renda and The Gator, and some people at WROO will be out of a job.
WKQL Kool 100.7-I know we have had our ups and downs about this station, but the station is finally making its turn around the 180 but its at 90 and its working its way to that 180 turn. One is that the playlist is bigger than the old station. Their is a nice mix of pop oldies, rock oldies, r&b oldies, and disco oldies which in turn makes people listen. Some of the music I have heard I had not heard in years when the old station did play some of the music before corporate radio went in and screwed it all up. Next you have your morning show with The Arf (kept by Briggs along with Rick Baron, no DJ firing when the station fliped). At least he makes the show family friendly at least. You can say he has changed since his days at Rock 105 and the other stations. Then last week Tom Murphy steps on board with his knoweldege and enthuisam about oldies and for him to be in the afternoon makes one think that station is moving towards the right step in making this station into a succesful one with highest ratings that will be coming soon. Expect more changes to that 180 coming soon.
WSOS 94.1 FM-This station can only improve from here. The station is moving to Jax, its going to get a power upgrade and a name change at best. The music format may shift a bit, but better to suit a growing demand for the Hot AC music. IF Renda decides to "JACK" 94.1 it will be a classic hits/hot ac format which will send Cox and even CC on a scramble trying to keep money and profits from Renda.
Renda is narrowing who controlls what in the market and do not be suprised if the end of this year or by the start of next year that the market is 30-30-30 with Renda, Cox and CC. The other 10 percent will be divested by the other station owners like Tama, Salem and the independents.
Lets see what you all have to say.
