Reno

I get that no one really talks about Reno from what I have seen. I was just wondering if anyone from Reno reads the board. If you do can someone tell me if the rumors are true about Cub having problems. I have started meeting people and wanting to get into the market and I like that station but have not heard anything good about working there. I would love to get a job but if people are not happy I would rather not. Does any one know who to talk to there????

I worked in Reno many years ago. Always thought it was a great place to live, but a crappy radio market (from a business point of view). It's even worse these days. This is one of the most over-radioed and over media'd markets in the country with way too many stations for the available ears. I can imagine that all the AMs there (except 780) are struggling, yet, I see where two more companies want to establish stations in Reno on 550 and 880. I too would be interested in the comments from those working in the market today.

It's a great place to live...

but the radio market there is very specific. Since country is your thing, it's a perfect "starter" market ... or if trying to move up in market size. (Reno Arbitron = 124?) You'll find it very difficult to stay there long-term though, because as seen with the other country favorite in Reno (KBUL), your stay on top is always in jeopardy. I know little about Lotus, only what my close friends have told me from working there.

However, Reno is a wonderful place with great people.

To say that Reno is overradioed is an out of date statement. Becasue of consolidation that no longer applies. There are only a handful of companies and no one is dying on the vine.

KPLY now on 630 Khz and the Buzz on 1270 both perform very well. As part of a cluster KJFK 1230 adds to their bottom line.

The 880 Khz. applications are not going forward as an applicant in Olivehurst, California won a preference. 550 Khz. has some tower site issues (they need 4 at over 300 feet) and that one is not going anywhere.

There is a new permit for 1060 Khz. at Sparks and you can expect that to go on the air later this year.

You seem to complain a lot and if you compare Reno to San Francisco you will find many cheap owners here (S.F.). The difference is that there is more small town gossip in Reno, however don't think that there isn't back stabbing that goes on in the big city when someone wants your job.

The good thing about Reno is that the housing is only somewhat overpriced, It's easy to get around for shopping and there's lots to do outdoors. Someday they may even get a AAA Baseball team.

As far as working at a station where the people say that are not happy, who cares? It's best to secure a gig and not get invloved in any of badmouthing, especially once you get hired!

Becasue of the snow and other things I have not been to Reno since Jan. 1. Can anyone tell me anything that is specifically happening or any overall news?

I will look for your replies.
