Repeat Question

A poster on one of the threads below asked, "What's next for the Edge?"

How about a format that's truly "alternative" or "active" rather than one that borrows classic rock from sister station 97 Rock and gets chewed up by Kiss, 97 Rock, 97.7 Hits FM and devoured by WYRK... the COUNTRY station.

> How about a format that's truly "alternative" or "active"

Are you suggesting that EDGE model after Edge 102 in Toronto Canada? (minus the 35-40 percent cancon, respectfully.)

How about some New rock in the morning to go with Shred and friends.
Always good to have an entertaining morning show, but it shouldn't be all talk if it doesn't have to be, and respectfully, it also shouldn't be all music...
______________

NO!! i dont think that would work..even if wedg-103.3 fm
"accidently" fills the can-con with new OLP; and other
cdn bands..modeling it after edge 102...well, first things 1st:

edge.ca has to discover who they are..

CFNY is guilty of what is being described below:
(cfny on more than a 'few' chance breaks, talk about
britney, jessica, and some hip hop artists)

Between the info-entertainment of britney spears,
jessica simpson's newest efforts, and emimen(?sp) music..
being played in rotation, or a feature part of
(WEDG) "edge music news.." (heard eight times daily...)
on 103.3 will not fly on wedg...it just won't.

If the attempt was made, your supporting cast ( adam12,
bull, s&R) will NOT want to talk about it, and there fore
it flops before it starts..

Plus, on edge102.1..they do what is mentioned above,
(which wont work), and also zip to the other extreme..
play alot of "unheard" of bands..which wont work on WEDG-Buffalo.
This time, the jocks would love playing..some "great rock" music..
but if each break, 3 out of 8 songs in the set, the listener
keeps on asking ..."WHO?!?" is that group. well, in this
aging/dying/moving away market that will not work either.

I am not even sure it is working in toronto.

Yes it is...to a reasonable degree. Certainly the station does well in sales and has respectable ratings. But don't forget that in Toronto The Edge is now the heritage rock station for a new generation. If any station of its kind KNOWS it's audience, it's CFNY.

To the Above:
I agree with..they "know" their audience. ANd, it is
"Cool" to talk about xbox-360, and ReaL topics to
ACTUAL listeners...and, it is amazing to listen to
them..as they have a throwback to the glory days when,
they mention two words..and it is a hot-new band...
:::That is what makes that station.."GREAT!!!"

...but, i am finding more and more..the jocks are
getting very close to sounding 'chr/top40' (Well, i wont
know what that sounds like, since buffalo, really doesnt
have a chr-top40 station, with a jock presence).

for the most part, we have jukebox 101.1
(although, they are getting alot better!).

and, we have kiss98.5 fm, like the board has mentioned..
janet and the pickle need to goto star 102.5!!

I catch outta market (internet, scanning radio dial, in other
cities, etc), and then tune back to 98.5 ...wow.

Actually, i Did
And, today in fact, i heard "heeya" on cfny-the rock alternative.

curiously, that is the only song by outkast that they will play.

So? They were also playing Eminem at one point too, and they shouldn't because...what's so alternative about that guy?

*I Couldnt agree more*, Em does get alot of uneccasary attention.
and for the record* they still sneak
him now and again....

Here is the real Question:
why mention a ton of new/cool bands live all month either at
the cool-house(?sp), smaller club/venue, or even the ACC, but

RARELY play these artists, they -TALK- about soo much ???
answer me that.

That's why it's called Edge102 today. Listen long enough, and you'll get Edgy! LOL!
______________

heh heh...good one.

Actually, that practice goes back to the day when The Edge was The Spirit of Radio, but they still relegated airplay of many fringe bands to specialized indie shows like The Streets of Ontario.
Nonetheless they attempted to relate to the indie/street crowd as much as they could and always would mention the shows that were playing at the smaller clubs (The Horseshoe/Lees Palace, etc) as long as they felt the artists playing would be known by at least some of the station's audience who were listening at the time...who maybe had heard the acts on "Streets". "Live In Toronto" expanded that idea by playing some of the music from the smaller bands...and even interviewing them...in prime time. Bottom line, however, is that the show's ratings were never as high as the rest of afternoon drive.

I would guess that's why the show...and many of the featured smaller bands...was dropped.

You're welcome. Didja know that Rush wrote "The Spirit of Radio" about CFNY back in the days when they were the only station playing the band's records? In fact, if you can get your hands on an original vinyl copy, you'll find the following scratched on the inner groove: The Sprit of Radio is alive and well in Toronto.

Cool, eh?
